What’s On & Online in Greater Philadelphia, Jan. 4-10
A season-long socially distanced scavenger hunt in Fairmount Park, last call for regional holiday attractions and more...Philly, it’s finally 2021. (Ya!)
That said, if you’re not quite ready to part with holiday fun, several regional attractions abide — but for just one more week. Timed tickets are available for the final days of some of the Philadelphia Countryside’s most popular attractions, including A Longwood Christmas at Longwood Gardens, the Holiday Light Show at Shady Brook Farm and the Christmas Drive-Thru at Sesame Place.
While the holidays have gone, winter remains, and folks looking to make the most of the weather in safe, socially distanced ways have the city’s seasonal attractions — Winter at Dilworth Park, Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest and Winter at Franklin Square — open for them all week long.
More solid options for the week ahead: the WinTOUR Scavenger Hunt in Fairmount Park, running all winter long; new restaurants and brewery outposts in Philly and the region; four 76ers games; and a free virtual museum dedicated to diagonality.
If you’re out and about this week and weekend, remember your mask. Masks are required in the five-county region in all indoor public spaces, as well as any outdoor space where social distancing isn’t possible. (Swoop sets a good example.) Another tip: Plan ahead, as many events recommend or require advanced tickets. Read more on visitphilly.com.
Looking for help with a Philly excursion? Call the Independence Visitor Center to speak with a visitor experience expert at 800-537-7676 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m seven days a week. They’ll help you navigate all the great things you can do right now — because it’s #OurTurnToTourist — in Greater Philadelphia.
Below, find things to do in Greater Philadelphia this week and the weekend in three categories: Philadelphia’s Countryside (i.e. nearby Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties); Philadelphia; and online.

WHAT’S ON IN PHILADELPHIA
Electric Philadelphia Mural in Philadelphia’s Historic District

Now shining bright in Philadelphia’s Historic District: Electric Philadelphia. The recently completed mural transforms the gateway to the Historic District with an 8,500-square-foot installation between Franklin Square and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge underpass that dazzles with color by day and illuminated lights by night. This public art partnership between Mural Arts Philadelphia and Visit Philadelphia features work by Philly-based artists David Guinn (concept and design) and Drew Billiau (lighting design).
Winter at Dilworth Park

Delightful pop ups abound in Dilworth Park every winter. Now through February 28, folks can embrace the season by cruising around the Rothman Orthopaedics Ice Rink, offering timed, 90-minute skating sessions; stroll through the Wintergarden on the Greenfield Lawn, an open-air wonderland of lights, topiaries and rustic décor perfect for photo ops; and relax in the Rothman Orthopedics Cabin, where seasonal cocktails and food await in a new converted open-air set up.
Winter in Franklin Square
During Winter in Franklin Square, presented by Citizens, the Electrical Spectacle Holiday Light Show presented by PECO makes this historic square twinkle, with free shows featuring more than 100,000 lights (more than ever!) dazzling socially distant viewers every night. (New for 2021: The lights will remain lit, but without the shows, through February 28.) Also on offer through the end of February: mini-golf on the Chilly Philly Mini Golf course and rides on the Parx Liberty Carousel. To keep the festivities safe, look for reduced capacity at the park attractions, sanitizing stations and expanded seating options.
Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest

Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest — one of Philly’s favorite winter traditions — has brought the seasonal spirit back to the Delaware River waterfront for another year. The winter wonderland offers guests a chance to go skating at the city’s largest outdoor rink and cozy up at one of the warming cabins and fire pit stations — all while overlooking the Delaware River. New for 2020: carnival games and a Ferris wheel. Reserve timed tickets for ice skating, cabin rentals and/or firepits here.
WinTOUR Scavenger Hunt in Fairmount Park

This winter, the Fairmount Park Conservancy is encouraging folks to get out and discover the hidden gems of one of Philly’s best green spaces during its new WinTOUR Scavenger Hunt. The free, all-ages and social-distancing-friendly scavenger hunt features five different routes, each with a theme: historic homes, public art, nature, water, and past & present. Participants who complete the 80 missions before the last day of winter (March 19) win a membership to the Fairmount park Conservancy. Happy exploring!
Buzzworthy Food & Drink Picks

2021 is off to a good start for local craft beer fans, with prolific regional brew-sters Iron Hill Brewing Company recently opening a 19th location (!) in Exton (this time with a new fast-casual model). Evil Genius Beer Company also recently opened two new pop-up beer shops, one in Northern Liberties and another in Rittenhouse Square. Restaurants and eateries have also had a busy couple of weeks: East Philly Cafe — a pop up at the site of the opening-soon Bridget Foy’s — offers festive outdoor dining with comfort food, classic cocktails and beer; Pivot Coffee & Soupery recently opened its new coffee and espresso shop, soupery, bake shop and wine shop (phew!) next door to Hawthornes; and Garces Trading Company has returned as an online marketplace and ghost kitchen offering food from multiple Garces restaurants as well as meal kits and baked goods.
WHAT’S ON IN PHILADELPHIA’S COUNTRYSIDE
Christmas Drive-Thru at Sesame Place

The official Bucks County-based theme park of Sesame Street extends its holiday celebration just a little bit longer with its popular and all-new Furry & Bright Christmas Drive-Thru. Guests take in their favorite furry friends, a seasonal soundtrack, millions of bright lights and more, all from the comfort of their cars. For its final three-day weekend, tickets only remain for Friday night. Translation: Don’t wait!
Holidays in the Village at Peddler’s Village

Peddler’s Village’s beautiful, festive decorations and 1 million twinkling lights continue to light this Bucks County shopping destination’s buildings and trees for one more week. It’s also the last chance for the Gingerbread Competition & Display, with more than 70 creative entries (through Saturday).
Holiday Light Show at Shady Brook Farm

This Bucks County farm’s three-million-light Holiday Light Show wraps up another successful season on Sunday. Drive or, if weather permits, ride in wagons past after-dark displays, illuminated tunnels and just about every imaginable holiday icon rendered in tiny bulbs. (Timed tickets required.) Guests can also stroll down Candy Cane Lane or rent space for a private and cozy campfire.
A Longwood Christmas at Longwood Gardens

Kennett Square’s world-renowned Longwood Gardens wraps up its transformation into a winter wonderland during the last week of A Longwood Christmas. What to expect during the outdoor-only experience: 500,000 lights glittering in trees; a whimsical toy train racing around its railway; and spectacular fountains and fire pit flames dancing to seasonal music. Timed tickets are required, so plan ahead!
WHAT’S ONLINE
The Daring Diagonal Virtual Museum
You’ll never look at a diagonal line the same way again after a visit to the online-only (and free!) Daring Diagonal Virtual Museum, from the brain of Philadelphia architect and art aficionado Joel Levinson. Museum-goers can explore 33 “galleries” across three “floors,” all highlighting the use of diagonality in art and architecture, starting in ancient Egypt and leading up to the present day. Make sure to stop in the gift shop on the way out!
Philadelphia 76ers Games
The Philadelphia 76ers — projected to be one of the better teams in the NBA’s Eastern Conference this year — hope to continue their early hot streak during four games this week (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday). Pro tip: Order in from one of your favorite local restaurants (and maybe pair your food with some craft beer delivery from the region’s acclaimed breweries). Find TV and radio broadcast info for each game on the NBA’s official site.
CultureFest! from the Penn Museum
West Philly’s Penn Museum takes a deep dive into Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Tibetan and more cultures from Asia all month long during the next iteration of the attraction’s super-informative (and all-virtual) CultureFest! series. In the lead up to the Lunar New Year (February 11), folks big and small can tune in to a dozen virtual things to do, including kid-friendly live learning sessions, an exploration of Philly’s Asian markets and a look at the story behind the Lunar New Year’s iconic lion dance. Event costs range from free with registration to $15 per person.
