Wix costs from $8.50 per month to $35 per month, depending on the plan you choose. You can keep costs down by selecting to pay for one, two, or three years in advance – this is far better value than paying monthly, no matter which plan you select.

The most important thing is to select the Wix price plan that's appropriate for the needs of your own site – there's no sense spending money on vast storage space and bandwidth if you're only maintaining a small business or personal site.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that if you want to make your site as good as possible, you need the most expensive Wix pricing plan. However, not all sites need the same features: for example, there’s no point in shelling out for an online store plan if you want your site to work as an online portfolio.

We’ll run through different types of websites and which pricing plan would work best.

Wix Free Plan

Wix offers a free version of its platform that will let you create a website without spending a single cent.

However, there are some big drawbacks. Your site will have a Wix-branded URL, with a string of numbers at the end – this will make your site look unfinished, and it will be penalized severely by Google, meaning fewer people will be able to find it. Your site will also be covered in Wix-branded adverts, which again will make your site look amateurish.

Perhaps the biggest kicker, though, is that your site will have very little bandwidth. This means that you won't be able to support many visitors coming to your site every month, or at once. As a result, even if people find your site and decide to stick around, they might not be able to come back later in the same month.

Wix Combo Plan

The Combo plan is the first Wix plan that we would actually advise people to use. By paying the nominal fee every month, you'll get a regular URL, or the ability to connect your site to a domain and URL that you already own.

Plus, you'll get full access to Wix’s excellent roster of website building tools. This means you'll be able to take advantage of its powerful drag-and-drop editor, excellent website templates, and range of third-party extensions.

The Combo plan also removes adverts, and gives you 3GB storage and 2GB bandwidth. You’ll also be able to upload up to 30 minutes of HD video. If you buy the Combo plan for a year, you’ll also get a free domain voucher.

You could run a brilliant website with the Combo plan, but it probably isn’t ideal for high-traffic sites given the 2GB bandwidth.

Could be a good fit for low-traffic, but professional-looking websites

Wix Unlimited Plan

$17 per month

The Unlimited Plan is Wix's most popular offering – and it's not hard to see why.

For a start, you'll get unlimited bandwidth. This should help alleviate any concerns you might have about traffic numbers. Your website's storage will be increased to 10GB, giving you plenty of room for videos, photos, and audio. Wix will also allow you to upload up to one hour's worth of video content. Again, there are no adverts on the Unlimited Plan.

Wix will also give you free access to its Site Booster and Form Builder apps. The Site Booster app will give you the tools and tips you need to improve your site's SEO, allowing it to appear closer to the top of Google rankings. The Form Builder app, on the other hand, will let you create forms to capture information about potential customers.

It’s not too much of a price hike over the Combo plan, and it’s probably worth the small increase in outlay given the extra visibility your site will get. Again, buy the plan for a year, and you’ll get a free domain voucher.

The best place to start for business and professional websites

Wix VIP Plan

$39 per month

The VIP plan is Wix's most expensive offering if you don't need ecommerce functions.

Again, storage is increased – this time, you'll get a 20GB limit. You're also allowed to upload two hours of video content. What's more, Wix will also give you the ability to send email marketing campaigns. You'll be limited to 10 of these per month, but that should be more than enough to help drum up some business from previous customers.

Perhaps the most important part of the Wix VIP plan is that you'll get priority support response. This means that, in the event something goes wrong with your website, you'll be able to get much faster phone support. This could be essential if you're running a big, successful business.

While some aspects of the VIP plan seem really similar to the Unlimited plan, having the extra support and marketing emails might make a big difference to your business' bottom line.

A good fit for established businesses

Wix Business and Ecommerce Plans in Detail

If you want to use Wix to create an online store or an ecommerce website for selling physical or digital products, you’ll need to use one of Wix’s Business & Ecommerce plans, rather than its regular website plans.

There are three on offer: Business Basic, Business Unlimited, and Business VIP. They’ll all let your site accept online payment, and won’t charge you any commission fees on products you sell. A Wix online store would be great for a small business, perhaps one with an existing bricks-and-mortar presence, which is looking to expand online.

It’s not as suitable for larger businesses, as it lacks some more complex accounting and product management tools.

Wix Business Basic

Wix's Business Basic pricing tier is its entry-level ecommerce offering. It'll cost you $20 per year if you pay for it annually, and it has very similar features to the Unlimited pricing plan.

You'll get unlimited bandwidth and 20GB of storage, as well as access to the Site Booster and Form Builder apps, which can help you boost sales.

When it comes to ecommerce, the biggest upside of switching to a Wix Business plan is that it won't take any commission from your sales.

Wix Business Unlimited

The Wix Business Unlimited plan doesn't offer that much more than the Business Basic plan – which is why it costs just $5 per month more.

You'll get access to Wix's logo builder (which normally costs $50), and this should help you make your site look more professional. Your site's storage is upped to 35GB, and you'll be able to upload up to 10 hours of video, so you'll have plenty of room for all your content.

However, we'd probably stick with the Business Basic plan over the Business Unlimited plan and save ourselves some money.

Wix Business VIP

The big change here is that you get VIP customer support. This might not sound like a real tangible benefit, but it might be invaluable should something go wrong with your website. After all, time is money, and the longer your site isn't functioning, the less money you'll be able to make.

The Business VIP plan costs $35 per month. This might seem a lot, but this plan is meant for established ecommerce businesses – $35 per month shouldn't take a massive chunk out of your profits.

Wix Enterprise Plan

You get all the features from the Business VIP plan, but you also get access to some bespoke features. For example, professionals from Wix will help you plan, develop, and launch your business, or give you a hand with growing your existing business. You also get annual security audits – handy if you're managing lots of customer data.

This Enterprise plan would be ideal for larger businesses with multiple employees and complex online operations. Wix has experts on-hand when it comes to website and business management, so it's worth leaning on their support whenever possible.

Wix Free Plan: Is It Any Good?

It has to be said – there’s actually quite a lot you can do with Wix’s free plan.

You’ll be able to create and publish a website, which is more than some free website builder plans allow. Wix even gives you free website hosting, although your site will be given a Wix-branded domain name on the free plan.

Beyond letting you create and publish a website, Wix’s free plan will also let you:

• Choose from over 300 templates – The free version of Wix offers just as many free templates as the paid version, spanning just as many different industries
• Create a blog – With Wix’s free plan, you’ll be able to set up a small blogging website – ideal if you’re just starting out
• Promote your business site online – With email marketing, SEO assistance and more, Wix gives you the tools to attract customers to your site (though they may be unimpressed by the suspect URL you get on the free plan)
• Use free stock images – If you’re just setting up your site, you can take advantage of Wix’s extensive image library
• Install third-party apps – You’ll be able to add extra functionality to your site to make your website even more useful for users, such as the Wix Art Store and Instagram Pro apps you can see below

Wix Hidden Costs to Watch Out For

While Wix is pretty clear about its pricing structure, there are some costs that you should be aware of before taking the plunge.

Free domains aren't always free

When you're upgrading to a Wix premium plan, you'll likely notice that you can get a free domain. However, you only get the free domain in certain circumstances.

• You only get a free domain when you purchase a yearly plan – not a pay monthly plan
• You only get a free domain with your first purchase – there'll be no free domain when you come to renew
• You only have two months to claim your free domain voucher from the time that you make your initial purchase of a yearly plan

Once your free year is up, you'll have to start paying for your domain, which will cost you $14.95 per year. Having your own domain is definitely worth it in the long-run, as you’ll get a professional-looking URL and the ability to have custom email addresses.

Wix plans auto-renew

Auto-renewing subscriptions can be annoying. All of Wix's plans are set to auto-renew, so it's worth making sure you know what you're signing up for when you take the plunge.

However, you can cancel the auto-renewing subscription in the settings on your Wix dashboard.

Head to Billing in your Wix account > Click Plan Actions > Click Cancel Now

You won't lose access to your account, or your site – it just won't renew at the end of your agreed term.

Premium apps

Wix has a large app store, which can help add loads of extra functionality to your site. However, some of these apps require some extra outlay before you can use them.

You won't have to pay to add an Instagram feed to your site, but some accounting apps, for example, only offer short-term trial periods. Premium apps typically cost less than $10 per month, but some can run up to $20 per month.

If the app is going to help you make money, it will probably be worth paying the extra cost. But if it's offering an otherwise free service, we'd probably avoid it.

Things to Consider When Signing Up for a Free Plan

However, the free version of Wix has its downsides – and some of these are quite significant.

For example, while you get hosting thrown in for free with a Wix free plan site, you’ll be limited to just 500MB storage and 1GB bandwidth per month. This is a paltry amount, and will likely mean that your site will be suspended and inaccessible for the remainder of the month if you breach the limit.

That's not all though – Wix reserves many of its most basic features for its paid plans. For example:

• You can't choose your own domain name – With a free Wix website, you’ll be stuck with a domain name like this: username.wixsite.com/siteaddress. It doesn’t look very professional, and your site will appear lower in Google’s results
• There will be Wix adverts on your site – If you choose to go with a free Wix website, you’ll find your impeccably designed pages cluttered with adverts for Wix’s services (and no, you won't make money out of them yourself)
• You can't sell products online – If you’re looking to sell the stuff you make online (i.e. create an ecommerce store), you won’t be able to do it with a free site from Wix
• You'll have limited features – For example, you'll have limited storage, meaning you won't be able to upload images, videos, or audio. Plus, you won't be able to make use of Wix's extensive app store
• You can't choose your own hosting provider – While we’ve mentioned that you can get free hosting on a Wix site, it isn’t very good. Instead, opting for a paid site will let you choose a different hosting provider, giving you more uptime, bandwidth, and storage
• You'll have basic customer support – On a Wix free plan, you won't be able to access all of Wix's customer service options. What's more, any support needs you might have will be considered a lower priority than those of paying customers.

Hopefully, you’ll now understand that while you can create a website for free on Wix, it’s a false economy to do so. Your site is your brand, and you’ll want it to have the right URL, to be free of Wix adverts, and to have all the storage and bandwidth you need to succeed. For all this, you’ll need to pay. The good news? You won’t need to pay much.

Cost of Wix Email Accounts

With a Wix premium plan, it's easy to sign up for a branded email account.

Here's what you have to do:

1. Connect a domain to your website
2. Click on purchase mailbox
3. Pick how many mailboxes you want
4. Choose a subscription and complete your purchase.

While that all sounds delightfully simple, as always, there some things to bear in mind.

Wix offers its premium email accounts through Gmail. If you like using Gmail, great. If you don't, it might be worth looking around to see if there's an alternative. However, this does mean that you get access to the whole of G Suite – including Google Drive, Docs, Calendar, and Hangouts – which might make it the perfect package for your office.

But Wix's prices are expensive – a premium email account and G Suite access will cost you $6 per month. It might be cheaper to try and find an alternative solution by going through a custom domain hosting provider, or directly through Google.

While Wix is our favorite website builder on the market, there are some alternatives that are better suited for certain types of website.

Squarespace – The best website designs

If having a gorgeous website matters more to you than anything else, we'd recommend choosing Squarespace.

It has an exceptional range of templates, which can give you the perfect starting point for creating a website.

Squarespace has a powerful editor, which means you can adjust each of the templates to fit your brand and style. What's more, Squarespace is an excellent choice for an ecommerce site, so don't think you're getting all style and no substance.

Shopify – Better than Wix for online stores

If you're after an exceptional online store, you need to choose Shopify. While Wix can comfortably serve the needs of small online stores, it starts to feel out of its depth when you're running a large operation.

Shopify, on the other hand, has a range of baked-in tools and extensions which can help you manage even the largest ecommerce operations.

Shopify is more expensive than Wix – but then again, if you're in the market for Shopify, its $79 starting price shouldn't put you off.

WordPress – Better for complex coding

WordPress is one of the most popular platforms in the world for creating a website. With a large community of contributors and developers, you can create almost any site you want using WordPress.

However, this level of customization comes with complication – if you're considering using WordPress, you need some basic level of coding knowledge.

That's why we recommend Wix for most people, as you don't need this knowledge to run a site using its platform. But, for some, WordPress is a brilliant tool.
