2020 is probably the most extended year we will see in our whole life. A vast number of people have spent the most significant part of the year at home. The remote work moved from "something to be explored" to Teams' reality around the world.

As a consequence, we had to learn how to work in an environment like this. Even people working from home before COVID-19 had to learn how to deal with the pandemic consequences.

On this eMag, we would like to pack some of the most relevant InfoQ content in 2020. And there is no way to avoid contents about remote activities.

We would love to receive your feedback via [email protected] or on Twitter about this eMag. I hope you have a great time reading this selection, and I wish you an excellent 2021!

The InfoQ eMag - 2020 Year in Review include:

  • Dealing with Remote Team Challenges - Remote working provides challenges such as providing equitable access, ensuring adequate resources and tooling, addressing social isolation and issues of trust. Remote-first and truly asynchronous teams tend to consistently perform better. In the future, organisations will continue to have remote on their agenda. Fully realising the benefits of remote teams requires trust-building and intent.
  • Ideas for Remote Retrospectives that Engage - Retrospectives have been shown to be an important tool for teams to improve their ways of working and increase collaboration. In person, retrospectives are well understood with many approaches and techniques. This article looks at how to carry the practice across when working remotely.
  • From Monolith to Event-Driven: Finding Seams in Your Future Architecture - One of the challenges of migrating your system’s architecture is excluding non-desirable attributes and leaving the target state uncorrupted. An event-driven architecture and its related patterns, CQRS and Event Sourcing, are positioned well to introduce seams into the architecture that allow you to separate legacy and modern elements.
  • Monitoring Microservices the Right Way - Modern systems are more complex to monitor as they tend to emit large amounts of high cardinality data.  Recent innovations in open-source time series databases have improved the scalability of newer monitoring tools such as Prometheus. These solutions are able to handle the high scale of data while providing metric scraping, querying, and visualization based on Prometheus and Grafana.
  • Reviewing the Microservices Architecture: Impacts, Operational Complexity, and Alternatives - Wes Reisz moderated a roundtable with Leif Beaton (NGINX senior solutions architect), Yan Cui (independent AWS and serverless consultant), and Nicky Wrightson (Skyscanner principal engineer), discussing topics around the microservices approach. Panelists shared their experience about it, analyzing the impact of microservices, challenges to deal with operational complexity, and alternatives.

InfoQ eMags are professionally designed, downloadable collections of popular InfoQ content - articles, interviews, presentations, and research - covering the latest software development technologies, trends, and topics.
