Hi! Can anyone confirm whether Postscript Type 1 fonts work on Big Sur? Thanks so much!

I downloaded Big Sur 11.1 and have had no problems. BUT, there is an issue with Postscript Type 1 fonts.

As a designer on Macs since early 1990s, I have invested in hundreds of Postscript Type 1 fonts. But now, some work and some don't. In Font Book, I selected all fonts and clicked "Validate fonts", but I get 719 OK but 331 serious errors. They had all been working perfectly previously.

For example, ITC Benguiat Gothic worked but not the italics. So, I removed the font family and tried to re-add the fonts, but then none of them worked! I don't know what to do right now. Adobe CC Fonts and Google Fonts do not have ITC Benguiat Gothic; do I have to buy 8 OTF fonts for £199 from MyFonts?

I have hundreds of InDesign and Quark files with specific fonts; will I have major problems every time I try to open them? HELP!!!

Font Management in macOS

This article explains how to set up Mac OS X for the minimum number of fonts. Also how to avoid font conflicts, and troubleshooting of font issues.

You should be able to use the Type 1 Postscript fonts by putting them in your user account font folder. I have seen cases where the oldest of fonts don't work properly, however. What are the errors that were reported?

Many thanks for your reply. But, I've had all my fonts, except minimum system fonts, in user/library/fonts for many years. So that's not the answer I'm afraid.

Without knowing the error your fonts are giving, I don't think anyone else is going to be able to offer much help.

Instead buy FontXChange and you'll be able to convert your Type 1 fonts into other modern formats. Type 1 fonts are becoming obsolete these days and you shouldn't rely on them.
