Unable to get an IP from DHCP – SOLVED

If you’re having problems with your computer being unable to get an IP from DHCP, then the below steps to reset your network stack should fix your problems.

Though before trying the below, it’s worth trying the usual fixes first (restart, disable/enable network adapter, restart you router/DHCP service if it’s not just one machine affected etc)

A quick way of checking if your computer got an IP from DHCP is to check the IP address your computer is currently using. If the address starts 169.254 then this is an APIPA (Automatic Private IP Address) that your computer has assigned its self, and not from DHCP.

The Fix
  1. Run command prompt as administrator.
  2. Run the following commands:
    netsh winsock reset
    netsh int ip reset
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
    ipconfig /flushdns
  3. Restart your computer

When your computer starts back up your issue, Unable to get an IP from DHCP, should be resolved. Should that not be the case you can find further troubleshooting steps on this Microsoft Article.
