The Linux Kernel Mailing List is Down (lkml.org) 76

Every page on LKML.org is currently displaying this error message along with a picture of Flits the cat. What started out as a power outage while I was on vacation (leading to the computer hosting the backend of this site being unable to boot) became a larger issue as the mainboard in that computer appears to be broken.

Not wanting to let you wait for a spare part to arrive, I'm currently (while being assisted by our cat Flits) busy copying over all data to a VPS, and getting things working from there. The rsync is progressing slowly, having copied over the first 50% in three hours (at 14:30 CET). Please check back later for status updates.

      Keep in mind that if they weren't cheapskates, they would pay for their OS, and wouldn't be using Linux to begin with.

      The site was literally running out of a closet in some random guy's house. The problem here goes a lot deeper than not having a spare lying around.

      • As others have pointed out, this isn't actually the mailing list, which is run in a much more resilient fashion. It's just a web archive of the list run by a guy as a hobby. Not nearly so critical.

      The set of all Slashdot readers.
      The set of all Slashdot readers who are actual (and not just claimed during the years in some post or another to try and lend legitimacy to one of their arguments) Kernel contributors.

      They did the #1 most important thing and made sure the data was safe. The rest is a matter of actual need. Will the world end if the mailing list is down for a day? No, it won't.

      Will millions of dollars be lost? Again, NO. Will someone spew Cheetos crumbs everywhere in impotent rage? Possibly, but not anyone who actually contributes to the kernel.

  • So the LKML is operational, all that's down is a website. Meh.

    • Indeed. The actual mailing list is hosted on vger.kernel.org, is operated by The Linux Foundation, and is running perfectly fine. lkml.org is an entirely separate third party service that is quite often slow and unreliable.

    • No. This is serious. I understand that as a work-around, Linus had to go to the park and yell at strangers.

  • Come on, Flits is on the case. Despite not having opposable thumbs, I've heard he's an excellent typist and fantastic sysadmin. Let's all just hope his human slave feeds him on time and his litter box well tended.;)

  • The lists are mostly hosted on vger.kernel.org. LKML is just fine. LKML.org is just a web archive.

    • FFS figure out how to turn off smart punctuation in your iOS keyboard settings before start sneering at anyone else.

  • There's this amazing thing called "The Cloud", you rent a piece of it and spin up a virtual server of your choice (I tend to go for CentOS because production should *not* be "bleeding edge"). The Cloud rarely goes down, and when it does it's not because some board got fried (there are exceptions).

          Well, when S3 got hosed, some of the data never came back. But note that lkml.org isn't waiting to replace the board, it's switching to a VPS. In fact, it's back up now.

  • It was great while it lasted. I am very proud to have used it all these decades, but now it is time to move on.
