I just took delivery of a iPad Air and would like to find a way to edit videos on a remote drive (Synology) without copying each and every source file to my device. Is there a way to do this? I've used Final Cut Pro on Mac and was hoping for a similar ability to use referenced files...

Hello, more experienced users would give you a better informative answer but as far as I know, it is a limitation of iOS and you have to download the source files to your iPad to edit them. I hope that I am wrong and this works out for you though!

I don't think that's true. Using FileBrowser, I can open and edit files on my laptop without having to make local copies. I think it's more a limitation of the editing apps.

No you can’t...at this moment.
It’s mainly a limitation of lightning speed and maybe usb c.
LumaFusion chief manager said that they cannot make external disk run so fast as they would like.

A fast SSD over USB-C should be fine but there is a lot of slow storage out there and Lightning would be painful at best. But nothing will beat the speed of local memory. There are definite practical limitations but I don't think there is a limitation in iOS precluding it.
