Zoom Set Up R&D Center In Singapore to Expand Influence in South East Asia

Beijing (PingWest)- Zoom Video Communication Inc, the video conferencing service provider, said it would open a research and development center in Singapore where it will hire hundreds of engineering staff.

The Singapore branches is Zoom’s first data center in Southeast Asia, the San Jose, California-based company opened it in August and it said in a statement that it is doubling its data center capacity in the country.

Zoom, which has more than 3,800 employees globally, did not reveal the number of employees in its Singapore operations.

The company has seen a surge in the number of people using its video-conferencing services this year as the coronavirus lockdowns has prompted workers and students to use video platform for communication while they are confined to home.

“We plan to immediately hire employees, leveraging Singapore's highly educated engineering talent pool. Our new R&D center and data center will play a critical role in Zoom's continued international growth," said Velchamy Sankarlingam, president of product and engineering for Zoom.

Technology giants such as Alphabet’s Google, Facebook, Alibaba and Tencent had set up branches in Singapore as companies intended to leverage the influence of Singapore and expanded their business further into other countries in South East Asia.

Singapore announced a new work visa for foreign executive of technology firms, which come against the backdrop that it tightens broader immigration curbs to try and mitigate fears over competition for jobs due to rising unemployment.
