Happy 1 Year, VTS Toronto!

It’s been exactly one year since VTS opened its doors in Toronto and hired its first software engineer. Two office moves, many trips to and from NYC, and 15+ hires later, we now represent a significant portion of VTS’s Product Engineering and Design (PED) organization.

In the current pandemic, our offices have been replaced with home working spaces and our trips between Toronto and NYC have been replaced by trips to the kitchen for snacks (VTS gives us an at home budget for this). We can’t believe how much has happened in just one year.

VTS Values have always been displayed our walls, but went through an evolution between each office, and now home offices.

Each of us decided to work for VTS after meeting the very welcoming folks from the NYC PED team. I was excited to be part of that team, and we’ve really jumped in to participate in the VTS culture! The Toronto office hosted demos, ran knowledge-sharing events like Group Code Reviews and brown bags, done lots of remote pairing, and led product discovery and user research. But we’ve also created a team culture that is uniquely Toronto. Here’s some ways we’ve translated the VTS Values to our team.

Be curious

When we were co-located in an office, Toronto had a weekly meeting called “This Week I Learned” where the engineers shared new concepts. Everything from VTS code style and tooling to product context. This was incredibly valuable as our entire team was new and onboarding, and sharing knowledge accelerated our growth.

Move as one

Collaboration with our NYC teammates has been a key part of our success. Some of our team members took part in the Distributed Team Working Group (along with folks in other VTS offices) that established important norms around working distributedly. This helped make our day-to-day, and transition into working from home during COVID, smoother.

Take ownership

As we have hired more people, projects have shifted ownership over to teams in Toronto. This has allowed us to not only build major product features, but run discovery work including user research, and planning from the Toronto office. Looking forward, the vision for the Toronto office is to have complete PED teams with ownership of specific product areas. Each team would contain a product manager, quality assurance analyst, designer, and engineers, allowing for multidisciplinary expertise in one location.

We’re proud of our past year, and even more excited about the future of VTS and VTS Toronto. We’ve done all of what it means to be a product development sister office. If you’re interested in joining our still growing Toronto team, please check out our careers page.
