近日，日本政府计划最早于2022年将福岛核电站的废水排入海洋的报道引发争议。在10月21日的新闻发布会上，日本原子能规制委员会（简称规制委）委员长更田丰志承认：“这是流经已损坏的核反应堆的水，（我们）强烈认识到人们会存在抵触感。”他表示将加强周边海域放射性物质的检测，并公布排放废水前后的放射性物质浓度信息。
