2020年1月23日，中国科学院武汉病毒研究所石正丽团队在bioRxiv预印版平台上发表文章，报道了武汉新型冠状病毒nCoV-2019可能和SARS一样来源于蝙蝠。2003年，SARS爆发之后，很多急性呼吸综合征相关的冠状病毒在其天然宿主——蝙蝠中被发现。以往研究表明其中一些SARSr-CoV具有感染人的潜力。
