T-Mobile Trades in OnePlus 7 Pro for 7T

T-Mobile is rolling the OnePlus 7 Pro out of its retail channels in favor of the new 7T, an analyst says. Previously, OnePlus said the 7 Pro and 7T would coexist.

T-Mobile is ditching the OnePlus 7 Pro for the OnePlus 7T because "OnePlus in the US wants to focus on a single model, which will be the upcoming OnePlus 7T," according to a new report from Wave7 Research.

The carrier confirmed that it has removed the 7 Pro from its website "due to low inventory," and is only carrying it in limited stores.

This is a bit of a change from the strategy OnePlus told us about at the 7T launch, where the 7 Pro and 7T would coexist. It's a more sensible strategy, too. The OnePlus 7T is a mishmash of upgrades and slight downgrades from the 7 Pro (better processor, different cameras, no pop-up selfie camera) to the point where it's difficult to tell if it's truly an upgrade or a lower-end alternative.

Wave7 compiles its reports from data collected at carrier stores. From a high of 5 percent just after the OnePlus 6T launch in late 2018, OnePlus' share at T-Mobile is now down to 1.3 percent, according to Wave7. The OnePlus 7 Pro 5G is on sale nationwide at Sprint, but Wave7 says the only place it's selling in a "decent" manner is Kansas City, one of Sprint's initial 5G markets.

In a market dominated by Apple and Samsung, it's hard for smaller players like OnePlus to get traction. Wave7 says around 90 percent of sales at each of the major carriers are either Apple or Samsung phones. That's a number I've seen backed up by other research, and the duopoly has only gotten worse with time.

The traditional third-place carrier player, LG, has been at 6 percent or below all summer, and Google's Pixel phones have declined to a 5 percent share at Verizon in advance of the upcoming Pixel 4 launch, the report says. "LG has no TV advertising and is doing less than other OEMs to build awareness," the report says.

We'll have a review of the new OnePlus 7T soon. The phone goes on sale at T-Mobile on Oct. 18.
