HTC financials show signs of life with best result in six months

HTC has been in dire straits financially for some time with profits taking a dive over the past several years. However, in a more positive sign for the Taiwanese company, its June unaudited consolidated revenue was up sharply from just US$24M last month to US$46.8M.

It's hard to imagine that just seven or eight years ago, HTC was still one of the leading Android smartphone makers on the planet. But the rise of Samsung and subsequently a myriad of Chinese competitors has seen HTC's fortunes take a massive tumble in recent years to the point where many wondered whether it would manage to get any new devices out the door this year at all. Incredibly, the company has released two new mid-range handsets in the local market and even managed to see a spike of 94 percent in revenue for the month of June.

While it's far too early to say that HTC is back just yet, it is a promising sign given just how dire the company's fortunes have been lately. In its best results for six months, the company posted unaudited consolidated revenue of US$46.8 million for the month of June. This was up from US$24 million for the month of May and suggests that its latest phones have gained some traction, at least locally. However, it is a million miles away from its 2011 heights which saw it raking in around US$1 billion a month.

The company had a minor hit with its Exodos blockchain phone selling out last year, and it plans to release a more moderately priced sequel this year dubbed the Exodus 1s. However, it isn't clear whether the company has any plans to release any flagship smartphones this year, which given the standard of the competition and HTC's inability to hit the mark recently, it would probably be wise to avoid. Still, it is pleasing to see that the company still has a pulse as it brought numerous innovations to the smartphone market at its peak.
