[Update 2: Photos of Blue Color] Leaked Nokia device shows off 48MP rear camera and waterdrop notch

Update 2 (8/23/19 @ 4:15 PM ET): The Nokia 7.2 with Zeiss optics leaked in hands-on photos in a new blue color.

Update 1 (8/21/19 @ 9:10 AM ET): A Zeiss employee tweeted a photo of the unannounced device, confirming the Nokia 7.2 name and camera module.

HMD Global releases smartphones with the Nokia branding on them. These Nokia smartphones boast of a close-to-stock Android experience, which puts HMD Global in a unique position of having most of its smartphones (except the Nokia 2) updated to the latest public Android version. Earlier this week, a prototype of an unreleased Nokia device from the Microsoft-era wound up on Ebay. And now, an upcoming Nokia phone has found its way to Weibo, giving us a good look at what to expect from this phone.

These images come to us courtesy of Weibo user @fenibook. The device pictured has the internal codename “daredevil”. Not much is known about this unreleased device, but what we can see in the leaked images are some of the headlining features.

First up is the rear camera setup with its distinct appearance. There at least two cameras on the back, housed within a circular casing. We are unsure of what the third sensor is, and the leaker also mentions that the whole setup is missing its glass cover in some of the images. The phone appears to have a glass back, and a rear fingerprint sensor.

The leaked device will come with a 48MP primary sensor, as is detailed within the camera settings as well as the previewed EXIF information. What we do not know is which exact sensor is being used. The camera UI also shows off a switch for wide-angle, indicating that the second camera on the back comes with a wide-angle lens.

The phone will employ a waterdrop notch for the front camera, skipping out on the crazy pop-up camera setups and the nascent in-display camera technology. There is a decent sized bezel on the top, and a considerable chin on the bottom sporting the Nokia branding.

The device will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC, and will come with Android Pie out of the box, neither of which are really surprising. The phone also has a USB Type-C port on the bottom, and a dedicated AI button on the left of the device. The leaker mentions that the phone will have a 3.5mm headphone jack on the top of the phone, and you can spot a cutout for the same in the case of the device.

This device will be the second device in Nokia’s portfolio to come with a 48MP rear camera, after the Nokia X71. We await further information regarding the device.

Update 1: Nokia 7.2

nokia 7.2 tweet

A Zeiss employee tweeted (and has since deleted) a closeup photo of the device we can now call the Nokia 7.2.Like the previously leaked photos, we can see at least 3 cameras and a flash housed within the round camera module. The Zeiss branding is plastered across the center as well. The photo also confirms the rear fingerprint scanner placement and navy blue color.

So far, we’ve seen the Nokia 7.2 in black with a case and dark blue. Now, new photos of the device in hand have leaked, showing off a new blue/green color. The color appears to be metallic with maybe a slight gradient, but that’s more than likely just the shadow. Again, we can see the circular camera module with Zeiss branding.
