1944年11月5日，美军空袭菲律宾日军，一架TBM机遭日舰高炮重创，后座炮手迪恩被打烂在座舱内壮烈牺牲，但该机在驾驶员考斯格洛夫中尉的操纵下仍挣扎着返回了母舰埃塞克斯号。由于该机损伤程度已超出修复可能，迪恩遗体也很难取出整理，美海军史上首次执行了连人带机的直接海葬。
