中国队虽然没能参加俄罗斯FIFA世界杯，但在与世界杯同期进行的机器人足球世界杯RoboCup上，代表中国的浙江大学ZJUNlict队以4-0大胜卡耐基梅隆大学代表的美国队，获得了RoboCup小型组的世界冠军。

资料显示，RoboCup是机器人领域最高水平的国际性赛事，2013年6月，熊蓉教授带领浙江大学队参加RoboCup2013机器人世界杯，最终决赛击败全美计算机专业排名第一的卡耐基梅隆大学（CMU），获得小型足球机器人组冠军。
2014年7月，RoboCup机器人2014世界杯，浙江大学队再次击败美国卡内基梅隆大学队，成功卫冕小型足球机器人组冠军。
昨天，RoboCup机器人2018世界杯，时隔四年，浙江大学再次击败美国卡内基梅隆大学队，获得小型足球机器人组冠军。
