Holy cow that is fast. Recently got this phone and amazed at how quick the updates are hitting. Clearly want to be the next Nexus I think.

level 2

Better than Nexus... Even Pixel don't have the updates yet...

level 2

This is a fantastic phone. Not sure what all the hate was about but in all honesty it's the best phone I've owned yet.

Cool! So Telus customers should have it by, what? June 2018?

level 2

Before us Sprint customers in the USA.

level 2

Sideload the update or insert a non TELUS SIM

I hear if you put in a Sim card from another carrier and reboot, you get the update. I got it today after factory reset and booting up without a Sim.

level 1

This is awesome. Finally an odm that takes security seriously. Thank you Essential.

level 1

Nice! Any changelogs or just the December patches

level 2

Just December.

level 1

I'm on Sprint and still stuck back in the Sept update! Is there anyway to get around this? Some said to put in a different SIM card and it would get updates, even if the Sim card wasn't active so I ordered a Verizon Sim from Amazon and stuck it in but it still said phone was up to date with Sept patch update. Any help would be awesome! Thanks

level 2

I don't know why you're stuck on the September update. I'm on the November one on my Sprint locked phone myself.

Really wish Essential would put a forced performance date on Sprint as Essential is getting the shit for Sprint dragging their feet on the updates.

Unfortunately I don't think a phone with what seem to be single or low double digits thousands of units sold has enough clout to impose anything on Sprint.

level 1

Canadian here using Bell network, installing it as we speak..

level 2

Toronto mans here, got my update on a koodo essential (running on freedom network tho). I love this phone.

level 2

OTA from the phone updater or sideloading the OTA or flashing factory images?

level 1

Can't wait to sideload!

level 1

Essential with those fast updates!

Just checked, no update for me. I'm on Oreo. Will I get the update if I'm on the beta?

level 2

The patch will likely be included with the 2nd oreo beta

level 2
· 5 yr. agoEssentially Awesome

They confirmed the OTA is for Nougat only, not Oreo.

The AMA last week said to expect a new beta release sometime this week, as u/dbailyn pointed out.

Awesome, hopefully this means the Oreo patch is next! Google is releasing 8.1 Dec 6th!

level 1

Is anyone experiencing 2-3 minute hard locks/freezing? Seems random but happened while watching Amazon prime video and then again just at the home screen while listening to Google music... Only seen this behavior since the new build.

EDIT: happened again once I got home from work, was streaming some music through my sonos system and woop, frozen, music paused, etc. I should mention, I am not rebooting the phone when this happens, I just set it down and wait and eventually it comes back/unfreezes after about 2-3 minutes.

EDIT2: I've frozen again for the fourth time now, this time I had to reboot, it remained frozen for over 10 minutes.. not sure what's going on. May go to Oreo if this continues.

level 1

Go Essential for having this out the same day that googles OTA is. /Tips Hat. Now the bigger questions is now that 8.1 has been released for the Pixels, Will Essential have that out for the next beta? or maybe for final Oreo Release

level 2

8.1 is planned for the future but it won't be a beta and 8.0 will get a final release before it.

level 1

Thank you Essential team! Unbelievable how quick and regular the updates have been

level 1

With the Build NMJ51B I can not go to the Oreo Beta anymore. Am I correct with this assumption? Thanks in advance!

level 2

Same, sideload fails when trying to go to the beta because the timestamp is older.

level 2

had to downgrade manually by flashing NMJ32F from https://www.essential.com/developer/current-builds

After that, the OTA sideload worked.

level 1

If it fixes the horrible Verizon service issues I will come back.. until then... /sigh

level 2

Why does everyone always downvote Verizon issues?

level 2

I'm on straight talk (Verizon MNVO) and have zero issues. Reset your network settings, clear cache, reboot. Also, some people say turn off enhanced LTE, but mine only works with it on.

level 1

Essential needs to talk with Sprint about pushing these updates at a much faster clip.

It's ridiculous that we are still on one of the initial builds from 2 months ago.

level 2

I agree that Sprint needs to speed their process up... But how awesome is it that we are complaining that we are on two month old software. Dozens of other top tear Android devices are on much older software.

And besides, it's easy enough to sideload. A bit of a hassle.. but totally doable.

level 2

Essential needs to talk with Sprint about pushing these updates at a much faster clip.

Especially since this device was a "sprint exclusive". However, one thing i do not understand is why if I have a pixel or nexus device on sprint i do not have to wait for the updates and can get them right from google OTA. What gives?

level 2

I don't think essential has anything to do with that. That's all on Sprint for being so slow.

there is a trick with swapping a Sim in, even if it's not activated, to get it to pull the updates from essential rather than Sprint.

level 1

Any updates on the Oreo beta2?

level 1

So how does this work for those of us on O beta? Will it still OTA update or will we not get December's android security patch.

level 2

Unless stated otherwise, I think we'll need to sideload beta 2

Anyone else having trouble with the stock camera? whenever I snap a photo, it doesn't save

level 2

works for me.

level 2

I'm having problems too. But it was prior to this update as well. I take a photo and it sometimes doesn't save, or more often it just takes a long time to save to the gallery.

level 1

Someone on Twitter said that haptic vibration is a little lighter after the update. Anyone else notice this?

level 1

Thus us awesome. Just checked phone and i have it downloading.

level 1

Looking at the info in the bootloader before and after the update, I can see that the bootloader itself was updated, as well as the baseband.

Old Bootloader: mata-aad8ac4 New Bootloader: mata-4452425

Old Baseband: 2.0.c4-M1.3.1 New Baseband: 2.0.c4-M1.2

It'll be interesting to see if the new modem improves signal/reception for some users.

The bootloader update shouldn't affect regular users. For power users, no, it does not enable the use of the "fastboot boot" command as has been requested by aftermarket ROM devs.

level 2

Well shoot.. Should have waited to see.. they didn't reply to any questions concerning signal in the last AMA.

level 2

Are the versions listed reversed?

level 2

the OTA I downloaded from XDA in the NMJ51B thread did not change my baseband. It was 1.3.1 before on 32F and stayed the same on 51B

edit: can't spell

level 2

Has anyone noticed if this did affect the signal performance?

level 1

Does anyone else use at&t with an unlocked phone? I didn't have lte service, called customer service and they were no help but after this update I have lte+!

level 2

I've had lte+ on att for months. But I came from.a branded phone so I figure it was due to original imei.

level 1

Anybody else having trouble adding icons to the home screen and/or quick launch? Long pressing does nothing, neither on the home screen nor the app drawer.

level 2

Not I. Worked before and after the update.

level 1

1 day! That must be some kind of record.

level 1

loving how has these updates come out. Mind blowing compared to my htc10 on the verizon network getting updates months later.

level 1

My PH-1 is locked in Sprint and I want to update it. Anyone has a idea how to do that?

level 1

I want to know if they finally fixed the smart lock issue.

level 2

That's an Android issue and has been fixed in 8.0

level 2

Are you also getting a blank Smart Lock screen?

level 1

Faster than the pixels!

level 2

Well Pixel factory December update images are up today as well along with official Android 8.1 starting today. Nothing can match Pixel but Essential is kind of kicking everyone else's ass.

Already installed the ota on my essential. And my pixel 2 xl still dont have the update! Great job @essential!

Anyone else notice their charge rate decrease after updating to this? According to Ampere I was charging at 1020 mA before I updated, but now I can't get above 500 mA.

Edit: I rebooted and now it's working like it was.

level 1

Amazing that a current Moto is on May or something. This just shows that software is just a commitment problem. I wish google would buy essential so they could truly compete against apple.

This makes no sense at all. How would Google buying Essential make them more competitive? The Pixel line has been successful on it's own and growing. Still not Apple/Samsung level, but it takes time. Essential is a tiny startup. I don't think they'd have anything to contribute to Google, especially considering the founder of Essential is the father of Android as a whole (bought by Google, worked with Google for like a decade, then ventured on his own). Google buying Essential would make Andy Rubin come full circle.
