Ten Australians are among those arrested as part of the takedown of Genesis Market, a site which was trading in data for all kinds of malicious activity,

A joint statement from the Australian Federal Police, NSW Police Force. Queensland Police Service and Victoria Police on Thursday said the investigation that led to the seizure of the site had been led by the FBI and assisted by the AFP, NSW Police Force, Victoria Police, Queensland Police Service and Western Australia Police Force.

It said at the time the site was taken down, it was offering access to more than 1.5 million compromised computers, each containing information for dozens of accounts.

Genesis offered login credentials, browsing history, autofill form data and other sensitive data taken from compromised devices.

The Australian side of the operation, named Operation Zinger, began in 2020 when AFP Cyber Command officers received information from the FBI about potential users of the site.

Australian officials executed 24 search warrants and arrested 10 people in three states, including one person from Victoria who is alleged to be the most prolific purchaser of compromised information in Australia.

This man, 31, was arrested in Box Hill on a NSW warrant on 24 March where he had been living after breaching bail for a fraud offence and police claim he spent more than US$38,000 buying information from the marketplace.

AFP assistant commissioner Cyber Command Scott Lee said Genesis Market could have caused $46 million worth of damage to Australians through sale of stolen Australian credentials and access to compromised Australian devices.

“If you used this website to purchase stolen information in the belief that you’re anonymous or that police don’t take it seriously, you are mistaken. This operation proves we are committed to stamping out cybercrime at every level,” he said.

Investigators identified 36,000 compromised Australian devices for sale on Genesis Market and more than 600 reports to ReportCyber that matched stolen information available on Genesis.

US attorney-general Merrick Garland said in a statement issued by the Department of Justice: “Working across 45 of our FBI Field Offices and alongside our international partners, the Justice Department has launched an unprecedented takedown of a major criminal marketplace that enabled cyber criminals to victimise individuals, businesses, and governments around the world.

“Our seizure of Genesis Market should serve as a warning to cyber criminals who operate or use these criminal marketplaces: the Justice Department and our international partners will shut down your illegal activities, find you, and bring you to justice.”
