Gaming latencies 'generally good': ACCC Featured

By Stephen Withers

The ACCC's latest Measuring Broadband Australia report covers gaming services for the first time, and the results are "generally good".

According to the report, latency to Australian servers for popular online games like Fortnite and League of Legends averaged 15 to 30 milliseconds per test on various NBN fixed-line technologies, so "users generally have a good gaming experience, with minimal stuttering or lag."

Distance affects latency, so New South Wales and Australian Capital Territory players saw the lowest latency (averaging 10–20ms) for Australian gaming servers because most Australian gaming servers being in Sydney.

Average latency increased with distance, reaching over 50 milliseconds in Western Australia.

Not surprisingly, "Australians playing online games where the server is located overseas may notice a lag or have a poor gaming experience," according to the report.

"While fibre to the premises and fibre to the curb connections generally had the lowest latency, all fixed-line access technologies had relatively low latency for games hosted in Australia. Consumers on fixed wireless connections experienced higher latency than those using fixed-line technologies. This is expected given the nature of fixed wireless technology," said ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey.

NBN speed tiers have only a small effect on latency, with an average of 25ms on NBN25, 24ms on NBN50, 23ms on NBN100, and 20ms on NBN250. Curiously, the average for NBN very high speed services was 21ms.

"We encourage consumers to consider the cost and quality of the various retail plans available and choose the plan that represents the best value to them," said Brakey.

In other findings:

* NBN fixed-line broadband retailers continue to meet their advertised download speed claims, even during the busiest hours: on average, 99.1 percent of plan speed across all hours, and 97.7 percent during busy hours.

• Upload speeds slipped marginally to an average 85.0 percent of plan speed during the busy hours, compared to 85.7 per cent in the previous quarter. (NBN Co does not overprovision upload speeds, as it does with download speeds.)

• NBN fixed-wireless services delivered some of the highest results seen by the Measuring Broadband Australia program.

• Uniti Group's superfast networks (mostly FTTP) and delivered on average 101 percent of plan download speed and 89 percent of plan upload speed during busy hours.

• Two of the top three RSPs for average busy hour download speeds in the report were smaller providers – Launtel (103.1 percent) and Exetel (102.9 percent), with Optus taking third place (99.9 percent).

"The results of some of the smaller retailers reaffirms that they can provide similar, if not better, performance than the larger telcos which is good for competition," said Brakey.

"This also reflects the findings in the recent NBN Wholesale Market Indicators Report, which found that smaller providers were gaining market share from the larger providers."
