根据发表在《自然》期刊上的一篇论文，宾夕法尼亚大学的研究人员分析了从 12 世纪到 21 世纪的数字化文献，为英语的演化提供了新见解。语言和基因都代代相传，它们在这一过程的每一步都可能因为随机变动和自然选择而变化。研究人员发现两种演化机制都作用于英语。随机变化在生僻词中比在常用词中更明显，这就解释了为什么语言中生僻词比常用词更易被取代。然而，一些动词的不规则过去式似乎与这一规律背道而驰，比如 “light” 的过去式是 “lit” 而不是 “lighted”，“dive” 的过去式是 “dove” 而不是 “dived”。作者提出，这可能是因为发音规则的变化引起的。
