Selfies on the Pixel 2 are insane. I actually want to take more selfies now considering how before every time I turned on the front facing camera I looked like crap on other smartphones.

I can't figure out getting portrait mode with the front cam. Whenever I enable it it switches to the rear camera.

That's, like... not a good thing.

Pixel 5

Thanks! I only had a quick look but I'd give about half - half p2-s8. The iphone was just off with the colors and outclassed.

P2, p2, s8, p2, s8, s8, s8, p2, iphone 8, s8, p2

google hdr is still king. Look at the window in the first photo.

level 2

wonder what would happen if every pic was taken with the same iso? sure, the pxl2 was brighter in the first photo, but it definitely had more obvious noise. but in the bathroom pic the pixel blew the others away in comparison. also couldnt get past how warm the iphone photos looked compared to the other two

level 2

I would argue that the iphone probably accurately captures the scene where the p2 and the s8 correct for white balance which might make for more appealing photos. Apple is going for accuracy where s8 and p2 are going for better looking photos.

level 1

Pixel 2 looks very blue in many photos, as if the white balance is off.

I think all three look pretty darn good overall. Picking up an iPhone X and pleased with these comparisons. I also have an Essential, and won't even get into that... Just good I carry a ILC with me.

level 1

As a photographer it'd piss me off having to white balance those pixel shots. They're all off.

It kinda overdoes the HDR in some of them too, leg/jeans pic for example.

But it preserves the most amount of detail (floor in the bed pic).

level 2

Yeah overall I feel like the iPhone did the best job getting the color tone right more often than the Pixel 2. The Pixel 2 is clearly superior in more challenging light and dynamic range conditions but for the other shots the iPhone is clearly much better at rendering pleasing colors.

level 2

Yeah I agree, they look too blue.

level 1

I personally think the S8 and P2 are both great based on these sets. For some of the pictures, I like the saturated look of the S8, for others, the more natural look of the P2 is better. Iphone is surprisingly lagging behind, I didn't choose that as the best pic in any set. I thought even Android fans agreed that iPhones are pretty much head to head with Android flagships in terms of picture taking ability, did Samsung/Google just make some massive leaps forward this year or has Apple taken a few steps back?

level 1

The iPhone doesn’t come out on top in a single one of these sets. Maybe the last one in terms of color accuracy on the blue wall, but man. Fall from grace.

The iPhone photos, to me, look like paintings rather than photos... all of them whether it be daylight, well-lit indoors, low-light. I seriously have no clue how the USA Today reviewer thought the iPhone was better than Pixel 2. it hasn't been at the top of the camera game for the past 3 or 4 generations of phones

level 2

The real sad thing is the iPhone has been so far behind in cameras on their phones that this is actually a large improvement.

level 1

Post this to r/Android to piss them off

level 2

r/Android isn't oblivious to the camera. You failed to notice the continuous acknowledgment and that it's considered like the one saving grace of this device?

level 2

I'm willing to bet that the vast majority of the subscribers on this subreddit also sub to r/Android

level 2

I'm pretty sure that sub is full of Samsung employees paid to praise them. Nothing but note 8 posts the last few days.

level 1

I think I'd take the note 8

the note 8 makes the s8 feels like a half a year old device even though it looks similar on paper

Pixel 2 XL 128gb, P4 64gb, S10e and IPX

Not sure why everyone wants to compare S8 instead of note8

level 1

iPhone colors seem off to me. Pixel has great detail but alot of scenes the s8 is right behind it. Test is kinda in favor for the pixel as HDR doesn't work the same on the s8/iPhone as the pixel. Wonder how the pics would of been with auto HDR.

level 1

I gave most to the Pixel, some to the galaxy, and a few to the iPhone. Pretty good. Although, what's up with that photo of the monitor? It seems like a well lit area, yet the Pixel photo is just completely filled with noise.

iPhone 8 on a couple, rest PXL2. Happy with my choice.

level 1

Lowlight on Pixel 2 is impressive and colors from all photos are more natural than s8 and iphone 8. Well done to Google.

level 1

...Can I just say. The baby blues in your spot are adorable. Holy shit.

level 1

please compare some panoramas!

level 2

somebody.. anybody.. please?

level 1

I want the Pixel to have my babies

level 1

I really don't like the noise reduction algorithm used on the Pixel. Looks like a random mess in the low light shots vs the more natural grain on the S8.

level 1

Wow, proper images taken from a camera. Unlike the "test photos" from other users and reviewers that are clearly not simple point and shoot, but taken with great care and preperation -- as they look uncommonly good . These photos are actually close to how images turn out when I take them with mobile phones.

level 1

Not even close the Pixel is def the best. Weird thing though, the S8 has better white balance/color reproduction in low light than in well lit environments, the iPhone has a warm tone (light yellow/orange hue) to everything, more obvious in low light.

level 1

Can we get a comparison with the note 8 and iPhone 8+

Absolutely my own subjective opinion, but Pixel 2 was the clear winner for me.

I gave the winner to the iphone and S8 twice each. However, I preferred the S8 as the iPhone did very poorly in a few of the shots where the S8 was much closer to the Pixel.

  1. Pixel

  2. Pixel

  3. Pixel

  4. Pixel

  5. Iphone

  6. Pixel

  7. Pixel

  8. Iphone

  9. Pixel

Overall I'd be happy with the camera in any of the phones. I currently own an S8 and I'm very happy.

level 1

Which phone reproduced the colors the best in pictures 2 and 8, OP? So, which one was the closest to how it actually looked IRL?

level 1

Not a big range of colors in any of the photos. Greens, purples and blues are almost entirely absent. I'd like to see the same set done outdoors

level 1

Did you enable HDR+ with zero shutter lag on the Pixel 2 or the "enhanced HDR+" setting on the very right?

The way light sources are exposed looks exactly like the ZSL autoHDR+ mode worked on the Pixel 1 (the middle setting).

Can't rate the pictures yet but the mentioned exposure was what came to mind first.

No. 5 looked horrible on all 3 phones. Haha just kidding OP ;)

No. 1 was hard to decide, but I think that I like the S8 best out of all 3. The Pixel showed more detail but it looked grainier also.

level 1

Pixel selfies look too over processed

level 1

why'd you use the optical zoom on the iphone for the selfie and the detail of the light?

level 1

It's a wash. Some look good by gs8 some by pixel and some by iPhone. Depends on the scene mostly. I love that we have phones so good at taking photos we need to nit pick them

level 1

Wish these came with a DSLR comparison as well.

level 1

I think its amazing how great cameras in all the flagships have gotten. I no longer feel like I'm missing too much when I don't have my DSLR with me :)

level 1

Gave 7 to the pixel, 3 to the iPhone and 1 to the Samsung. Pixel has a really good camera.

level 1

S8 oversharpens. As does the Note 8 in other comparrions I've seen on Youtube. Iphone 8 overexposes. Pixel 2 is by far the best balance of everything and ends up looking the best.

Just Black

The one with jeans is the only photo I prefer on iPhone. One featuring Old Spice looks the worst from Pixel

level 1

Pixel2 looks washed out in every picture...

level 2

Obvious troll. There is maybe one shot where I don't think the pixel 2 was better (shot of jeans looking down)

level 2

Lol what? The Samsung oversharpens and loses a lot of details. The Iphone overexposes and gets really bad colors because of that, as well as outright loses details on bright areas.

level 2

Almost like it is showing the actual colors of the objects and not oversaturated or overexposed like we see everywhere else?

Definitely the pixel 2.
