You can pinch zoom Youtube videos to get full-screen display on your Pixel 2XL

I didn't see this mentioned anywhere before, and being able to watch youtube with the entire 2XL screen is really nice.

I'm not able to reproduce this on my 2 XL. Update YouTube you slobs.

Maybe you need to update the youtube app?

Pixel 6 Pro

I had this demoed to me at the Google event, been meaning to write about it after testing on other 18:9 phones, but time got away. They told me it's a Pixel 2 exclusive though.

I'm on 12.40, which I believe is the latest version, but I can't seem to reproduce this. Edit: FC'ed YouTube, now it works.

Thank you! I had to force close the YouTube to get it to work as well. Was driving me crazy.

level 2

omg Lorde woooooooo

I was already listening to PH.

level 2

Mine works just like that. There was also another update just now, so maybe that fixed it.

level 1

It works, dope, thanks

level 1

Damn, that's great to hear. Read everywhere that you'd be stuck with the black bars on each side. I hope more people see your post

level 2

I don't understand what's so bad about black bars. You'd rather have a load of the video cut off than watch it as if it was on a device with some slightly larger bezels?

level 1

That is awesome!

level 1

If it required an update from the YouTube app then I'm assuming the answer to this is that it doesn't, but would you be able to test if this works for streams from Twitch?

level 2

I already tried and there's no zoom option. However, the theater mode where you have the chat on the side uses the entire screen.

level 1

I think this trend is very worrisome, simple software features being exclusive to hardware. It's not like it requires a specific chip or screen...

level 1

Thanks for this. I asked this same question in different threads, trying to explain why we might need this feature on the Pixel 2 XL, but was sorta ignored or got downvoted instead. lol.

Anyway, thanks again. Good to know!

level 2

Same. A lot of people really don't like cropped videos I guess

level 1

Thanks for this! Does anybody have a video showing it?

Also works in Google play movies 😀

I thought that every phone did this now.

I really think that Google Now was the ideal implementation of things like Lense, the Assistant, and all of the other Google integrations with your life. Swipe over to see upcoming flights, events, packages in transit, where your car was parked. Hold the home button to have Google analyze the screen. It was just so cleanly integrated and I loved it!

Now you swipe over and it's just a news feed. That's literally all it is. Random news articles.

And you can't even hold down on the home button to bring the Assistant up. You have to go to the home screen first.

Oh, and analyzing the screen? Take a screenshot first! 🙄

It's all just a huge downgrade from what it used to be, and it's so disappointing.

I was having issues with my Pixel 6 fingerprint unlock until the recent June update. Basically, my phone would unlock in 2-3 attempts. Now, after the June update, even without adding my fingerprints again, my phone unlocks on the first attempt and it's working perfectly.

Anyone else had the issue fixed?

I saw not one but TWO Pixel 6's out in the wild in my mid-size Canadian city today. (Around 280k.) I saw a Sorta Seafoam coloured one, and a Stormy Black when I was exiting the bus. It's a instantly recognizable (to me) design. Just as an observation.

I had the Pixel 3a. (Ended up upgrading to the Samsung Galaxy A53.)

My girlfriend just switched from a Pixel 2 XL to a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 (which she generally loves) but immediately started getting way more spam calls and texts than before. Many are addressed specifically to another person, which has me thinking that she's somehow getting calls/texts intended for the previous owner of the phone.

Or, is she just now receiving spam calls and texts that the Pixel had been blocking? I'm wondering if this is a Pixel > Samsung problem specifically or something else.

So Android has a safety feature called 'Emergency SOS' where if you tap the power button 5 times it starts sharing your location with selected contacts, calls emergency services, and does other things like that. It also has a demo mode for it that states "Bear in mind that this is a simulation. No emergency actions will be started during the demo, including sharing, recording or calling emergency services" before asking you to press the power button 5 times to see what it looks like. I decided to let the timer expire because I was curious what it'd to - turns out it had actually activated the SOS feature, so I had to deal with emergency services and then message my panicked parents to say I was OK 😭

Edit: A lot of people in the comments are saying that they've successfully done the demo without it activating for real. Just to be safe I'd still recommend disabling it before using the demo but it's good to know that what I had was a bug and not an oversight by Google

I work in an area, where cellular connection is pretty borderline. But today, after the june update, my connection is more stable and network battery drain is under 5%. Looks promissing!

[EDIT] Sidenote: My cellular icon changed from 4G to LTE after the update. Could be a hint for a bigger change in terms of cellular network handling.

I got my pixel 4a 5G over a year ago and since the new Android update my phone has tanked horribly in performance. It randomly and frequently has moments of just being unresponsive. Too frequently just sitting there waiting for my phone to wake up or go to sleep. Even the charging screen when the phone is turned off has begun to lag and stutter. Anything to do to revert this? Im tired and want my good phone I had last year June/July back.

The June update fixed the issue where USB DACs didn't work on the 6 and 6 Pro (at least for me it did). So glad they fixed this issue!

Note: DACs would work fine on the 6 and 6 Pro as long as you did not give an app exclusive control of the DAC to listen to music without it being processed through Androids audio driver. This has now been fixed.

I can't even tell how exciting I was when I heard they added LGBTQIAPK wallpaper in the Feature Drop, what a powerful Tensor chip

I'm literally crying 😭

Sound familiar?

The lock screen is at the center of Apple’s iOS 16 updates, starting with the ability to customize fonts and colors used. It will be possible to add widgets and configure multiple lock screens that you can switch between by swiping across the screen.

You know what, good on Apple, I don't care if Android had it first. What annoys me is that Android did have it first, but Google for no useful reason just got rid of it. And no, lame "at a glance" weather or timer doesn't count.

Have tried two different cables, two different adapters. Only got to 8% over 8 hours charging. Have had issues in the past where it's charged very slowly, especially in the car, but never like this. I managed to get it charged enough to turn off adaptive charging.

What's the next step? The phone is only 3 months old.

I am a lurker on reddit and the Google Pixel subreddit, and have noticed many others are also having modem issues on their devices.

First and foremost: no, I do not hate the Pixel 6 Pro, and yes, I am quite aware that many of you "are not having issues and it works just fine". The mere fact that I have not switched phones yet, and taken a hit to my very own sanity for doing so, is a clear indication of how much I actually love Pixel phones! This is information for those who are having issues and may be experiencing the same issues I am having. It is here purely to help others and corroborate the ongoing issues with modem / signal issues for some users.

I'll try to keep things as short as possible, summarizing everything so far.

Some months have passed since seeing posts regarding others's modem issues, and my following main concerns, tests, and experiences are addressed below:

  • I've switched cell providers from Visible, to US Mobile, and now currently to Verizon. I can confirm the signal in my area on Verizon and Verizon MVNO's while using a Google Pixel 6 Pro is poor

  • My roommates (who both have iPhones on Verizon) never have drops in their service, or any signal issues, and consistently have at least ~20mbps

  • When putting an AT&T SIM card into the Google Pixel 6 Pro, the service is slightly better in my home, but I did not test this SIM card past that

  • I switched to an iPhone 13 Pro Max / Apple Watch briefly but switched back to the Pixel because my personal experience using the iPhone software was not positive

  • I received an RMA Google Pixel 6 Pro, which is having same modem issues as my last Google Pixel 6 Pro (exclamation point / no service, have to enable and disable airplane mode or fully reboot my phone to attempt get service again) while I am on Verizon, and I was previously on Visible and US Mobile

  • Verizon is working the best on my phone, but the new issue (specific to Verizon) is that 5G Ultra Wideband stops working abruptly. 5G UW only works for minutes at a time until crapping out (literally NO INTERNET while on 5G UW, but no exclamation point appears). When it does work during those few minutes, I've seen as high as 900mbps

  • I've traveled to other states within the US and have had the same issues occurring in other areas; so while the service in my area may not be as great as in others, I still see recurring issues in other areas as well

Everything else with my phone (except maybe the fingerprint scanner) is literally perfect; 90Hz screen, snappy processor, camera quality, and most importantly the Google Pixel software experience.

I'm sort of at the point where I wish I could just bite the bullet and downgrade back to a Pixel 5. My phone would slow down significantly (which is the whole reason I had purchased a Pixel 6 Pro instead), but I do happen to like having cell phone service where it's supposed to be.

At this point I'm nothing short of feeling disappointed and utterly defeated. I won't switch to an iPhone because they aren't all that great (namely the poor experience they have with gestures for one-handing the phone, and lack of support for 90Hz in important apps), and I won't get a Samsung phone because OneUI is a bloated mess with a Samsung experience in mind, not a pure Google one (which is pretty spot on). So for now, I'm kind of just stuck in this place where the only things Google can do for me are to:

  • Direct me back to my carrier and try to pin this on them

  • Run me in circles again and tell me a patch is on the way

  • RMA my phone again and see if that resolves my issues

I'm not sure what else to do at this point, I'm kind of just hoping for some miracle to happen so that I can start to use my phone without the worry that I might not be able to receive phone calls or messages while I'm out, or more frequently, have to reboot my phone while I'm driving because Google Maps won't load due to my phone switching to 5G UW or having exclamation points next to my signal bars. Reddit is the last place I can go seeking support as Google clearly cannot help with this issue.

*Fix for issue causing display brightness to increase when flashlight is turned on (A-219732625) [2].

Why haven't I seen anyone else highlight this? This was so annoying every time I turned on my flashlight and even MKBHD said this was one of the reasons he said the 6 Pro was buggy. Finally the most annoying oversight is finally fixed and I can actually use the flashlight when it's dark and not get blinded looking at the screen. Nobody seems to have noticed this was a fix so I want to highlight it myself for everyone else to see if you haven't.

June OTA is live. 211mb for Pixel 6 Pro

My first Pixel 3XL in Not Pink ended up getting stolen. When I needed a new phone, I ended up with an iPhone my dad handed down to me when he got a new one.

Well a couple years later, and I am typing this out on a Pixel 3XL in Not Pink 💕 missed this thing so much

Posted by3 days ago

Haven't seen any news on this just yet but we should be getting the June feature drop tomorrow right?

I know there were rumours of potentially giving us a much awaited feature...Google gods please bless us with face unlock!!!

Posted by3 days ago

Don't get more wrong, I still like getting new features on a regular basis. But since the last Pixel released 80% of the features are US only and the rest of the features are most of the time quite niche features. (Sound Amplifier, Pocket Operator etc.). Is this only me or has the excitement dropped a little bit more after every feature drop?

Meanwhile, I still can't choose my icon shade since Android 12, I can't change the Lockscreen clock (which was found in Betas years ago, and now comes to IOS 16), I still don't have automatic captions (because it's only available in english since it's release), I still can't choose an Icon pack nor hide the font on the homescreen, and the list goes on. Hopefully Google gets back on track with features that many people can enjoy. That doesn't mean that the others aren't important (things like sound Amplifier might be the most used app for some people out there) . However, it shouldn't be only US and niche features every time...

Article https://www.phonearena.com/news/pixel-6a-android-gets-its-own-iphone-se-6-years-after-apple-but-is-google-too-late-to-the-party_id140416

The artile is not the best, but it did spark a few ideas I had.

  1. Pixel A series may need to lower the MSRP

  2. The A series may need to be released in March of instead of August

The pixel 4a imo, was one of the best value phones google ever released for $350. With new A series phones being released at 450 it is not only competing with the Galaxy A53, but it is also competitng against the next gen pixel that only costs 150 more.

I see why the pixel 6a costs more due to the processor. However, I hope they go back to putting a flagship camera in a lower end materials phone.
