How to Extend Your Eero Mesh With Amazon Echo Speakers

You can now use select Alexa speakers to expand the Wi-Fi coverage of your routers. Let us walk you through how.

If you have an Eero mesh system, you can extend your Wi-Fi network with select Echo devices. Amazon acquired Eero in 2019, and the company has continued to turn out some of the best mesh Wi-Fi routers around. The Eero range is especially good for Alexa-based smart homes, offering tight integration if you link your Amazon and Eero accounts. Read on to find out which Echo devices can act as Eero Wi-Fi extenders and how to set them up, but note that Eero Built-in is only available in the US and Canada for now.

Any Echo device with the “Eero Built-in” badge can now act as a Wi-Fi extender for your mesh network. Compatible Echo speakers extend coverage by up to 1,000 square feet, offer speeds up to 100 Mbps, and can connect up to 10 devices. All compatible Echo devices use the 5 GHz band (no 2.4 GHz or 6 GHz support).

All you need to get started is a compatible Eero gateway device (your main router). Here’s the complete list:

And a compatible Echo speaker. Here’s the list:

Update Your Software

Ensure that your Eero system, Alexa app, and Echo speakers are all up to date. Here’s how:

  • Open your Eero app and go to Settings > Software version. It should be v6.12.1 or later.
  • To update your Alexa app on iOS, open the App Store, tap on your Account profile top right, scroll down to Available updates, and update Alexa if a new version is available.
  • To update your Alexa app on Android, open the Google Play Store, tap your Profile top right, select Manage apps and devices, and update Alexa if a new version is available.
  • You can update your Echo speaker by saying, “Alexa, check for software updates.”
How to Use Eero Built-in

If you used your Amazon account credentials to sign into Eero, you can skip this next set of steps. But if you used separate login details for Eero and Amazon, you must link your accounts. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Eero app and tap on the Discover tab.
  2. Choose Amazon Connected Home.
  3. Read and then tap Connect to Amazon.
  4. Enter your Amazon account details and tap Sign-In

With everything updated and your Amazon and Eero accounts linked, you are ready to try Eero Built-in. (NOTE: You must use the same Amazon account for Eero, your Echo devices, and the Alexa app, and they must be on the same Wi-Fi network).

  1. Open the Eero app and tap on the Discover tab.
  2. Tap Amazon Connected Home.
  3. Select Eero Built-in and make sure it is toggled on.
  4. You should see your compatible Echo devices listed, and you can toggle on the ones you want to use as Wi-Fi extenders.

Now that you have activated Eero Built-in, any compatible Echo devices you add in the future will automatically extend your network. You can always see which devices are part of your network on the main page of the Eero app. All your active Eero routers, nodes, and Echo devices appear in the blue section at the top. Eero suggests using Eero Built-in on no more than four Echo devices for the best results.
