China’s wearable device market shipped 28.57 million units in Q2

Chinese Wearable Market

IDC recently released a report on the Chinese wearable device market. According to the report, wearable shipments in the second quarter of 2022 had a 23.3% year-on-year decrease to 28.57 million units.

  • The headset market shipped 16.18 million units in the second quarter of 2022, down 23.2% year-on-year. Also, the shipment of true wireless headphones was 12.73 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 22.1%.
  • The smartwatch market shipped 8.46 million units in the second quarter of 2022, down 12.3% year on year. Among them, there were 4.23 million units of adult watches, a year-on-year decrease of 14.5%. Shipments of children’s watches were 4.24 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 10.0%.
  • As for the smart band market, it ships 3.83 million units in the second quarter of 2022, down 40.2% year on year.

In the first half of 2022, there is an increase in the shipment of high-end wearables. IDC expects that China’s adult watch shipments will decline by 3% in 2022. In 2022, the sales volume of adult watches in China should reach a growth rate of 8%.

Wearable devices underperform at monitoring calories

According to a recent report, wearable devices perform poorly at tracking calories. Not only that, but the average deviation from actual daily energy expenditure is unpredictable and highly variable. This means that smartwatches are useless for tracking calories.

The good news is that these smartwatches perform better for heart rate monitoring. While Apple Watch Series 6 is good for heart rate monitoring, Polar Vantage V and Fitbit Sense wearables perform better or worse depending on the sport. In addition, the step count is reliable for all devices.

The study, therefore, concludes that smartwatches and wrist-worn fitness trackers on the market are not reliable for certain activities. Also, they are very unpredictable. However, some studies suggest that smart wearables alone may have a positive impact on a person’s fitness life. Furthermore, people who use smart wearables tend to increase their overall activity levels.
