Interview Questions: Design positioning in a company

Make a great impression in your following interview

There are many blog posts about interview questions, and I don’t think any of them are wrong or bad questions in general. But as a product designer interviewing with your dream company, you have to choose which questions to ask and when.

As someone who likes to think through this for every company and every type of interview, I often find myself creating a list of questions one or two days before the interview.

Here’s a short list of questions that you can choose to ask in the last 15–20 minutes of the interview session with the design manager or a product design leader in the company:

Designer Onboarding

How can onboarding assist in giving a new design recruit the institutional and industry know-how required to succeed in their position?

I’d like to think I have seen tech's best and worst onboarding processes. For example, in my last role, the product lead just sent me a checklist to my new email address with a bunch of names of people that I needed to meet and converse with to extract more information about the company. In another role, HR sent me a PPTX file via Google Drive to read through and prepare to tackle a new project I knew nothing about. But on the other hand, I have also worked at a company that gave me 30 days to get started, ask questions, revolve in different departments, and sit in meetings to choose the project I want to start contributing towards.

Based on the company you join, you will get to see an entirely different type of onboarding. Whichever is the case, I now know that a good onboarding is essential, and without one in place, you might find yourself struggling to put your best foot forward for quite a while. A well-thought-out onboarding process also shows that the company is thinking about not just themselves but also how they make a new employee feel in their first week at the company.

Design Contribution

What is the present focus, and how does design contribute to improving the current strategy?

The answer to this question will help you to realize whether you want to work at the company or on a particular project at the company. Suppose the project/challenges the interviewer describes don’t interest you. In that case, it is fair to say that even after joining the company, you won’t be excited to deliver towards the success of the company/specific project. Therefore, use this question as an assessment scale of what the future will look like if you join the company as a designer (in whatever capacity). Measure it against your short-term and long-term goals.

Team Expansion Hurdles

What difficulties do you face when you scale and expand your design team? If so, how do you envision fresh design recruits assisting in easing some of these difficulties?

The question helps you to establish a stronger connection with the interviewer. It shows that you care and are empathetic toward your fellow designer or design leader. Understanding the challenges while scaling the team can also help you suggest ideas or bring exciting topics to the table for further discussion. It can also help you to jump into mentoring junior designers quite quickly.

The questions establish yourself as an empathetic designer looking to solve problems, proactive, and thinking about the team before themselves.

Future Skill Additions

What are a few of the skills your design team lacks?

This answer to this question will help you understand better if the team is looking to expand, and if they are, then what are some of the specific skills like UX research, Visual Design, or Stakeholder Manager they are looking to hire in the team. Then, you can take these skills into account and measure yourself to access which of the skills you lack and further can grow in the future (regardless of the interview verdict).

If you collect this list of skills for enough companies, you’ll have yourself a personal skill roadmap to improve yourselves as time goes by. In addition, the skills list will help you be active and away from Netflix 😂.
