The Telegram Messenger app released a new update this week for iPhone and iPad that lets you set customize sounds for notifications, mute chats and enjoy a few other enhancements.

Telegram app custom alert sounds and mute durations

First among the update’s changes, now you can make customized alert tones. After you update, you can make custom alert tones in the app from short audio files or from voice messages. They need to be under 5 seconds long and less than 300KB in size.

You can create multiple custom alerts and assign them to specific chats or groups of chats. Telegram built a Notification Sounds channel with some samples to help get you started.

Second, you can customize how long you mute chats. If you’re less about customizing alert noises and simply prefer to reduce the storm of notifications you receive, the update offers some custom mute options.

Telegram has allowed you to temporarily mute chats for pre-set durations, but now you can set your own duration of muting.

Each chat now has a streamlined menu for alert modification. In it, users can choose Disable Sound to receive notifications silently. Or they can pick one of the Mute options to turn off notifications completely.

Other updates

The new update also improves in-app message translation in iOS, adds a new interface for changing phone numbers and welcomes additional animated emoji, such as a “Food that moves” category.

More details about other changes and improvements to the Telegram interface can be found on the developer’s blog.

Another interesting highlight relates to bots. Telegram said it’s creating a “bot revolution.” As the company said:

Today we’re adding an entire new dimension, giving bot developers the tools to create infinitely flexible interfaces with JavaScript, one of the most popular programming languages in the world. With this, Telegram bots can completely replace any website.

Telegram version 8.7 is available for iPhone and iPad now.
