How to create an ergonomic office

By Guest Writer

GUEST OPINION: Many injuries sustained in the office are due in part to the lack of ergonomics in the setup. Not much thought is often put into the health and safety of workers from Australia to New York when it comes to an office environment. While there is little heavy lifting in an office, there are still many dangers that can cause injury.

Improper posture, back, and eye strain are real issues that face office workers. Companies need to become more aware of how an ergonomic office can help to keep their staff happy and healthy.

The goal behind creating an ergonomic office is to eliminate injuries like back strain, carpal tunnel syndrome, strained muscles, and tendonitis. Starting with the best standup desks in Australia or New York, you can create a safe and comfortable workspace for your employees. Let’s take a closer look at a few ways that your company can create an ergonomic office.

Pro-Posture Chairs

If you spend most of your day sitting at a desk, it’s imperative that you have an ergonomic chair that is pro-posture. Having the right lower back and pelvis support is crucial to maintaining your back health. An ergonomic chair is designed to hug the curves of your spine and is easily adjusted to fit any sitter.

It’s important that you have your chair adjusted properly for the best results. Make sure that you are also sitting at the right height. Your legs and knees should be at a 90-degree bend to the floor with your feet sitting flat to relieve tension on the lower back.

Stand-Up Desk

In the past few years, many office workers have switched to using an adjustable stand-up desk at the office. These innovatively designed workstations can be used as a traditional desktop surface for your computer or extended so that you can use them in a standing position. Many users find that standing while working relieves muscle tension and allows them to move around their workstation more freely.

Monitor Height

Many office workers suffer from neck and shoulder pain. Much of this discomfort is caused by using a monitor that is not properly set up. If you are looking at a screen during the day that is placed too high or too low it means that you will have to stretch or bend your neck for hours at a time. When sitting in your chair, set your monitor so that it is situated directly in your view without the need to look up or down.

Eye Care

For those that are looking at a computer screen for most of their day, eye strain can be a real problem. You may want to offer your employees specialized eyeglasses with a yellow or blue tint that helps reduce the exposure that a lit screen has to the eyes. In addition, make sure that your work area is well lit and not dim where you have to squint at your paperwork to see it clearly.

Take Breaks

Most people may not think that sitting at a desk all day would be tiring. But, in fact, remaining in a seated position for too long can be exhausting for many of your muscle groups. Your lower back, neck, and shoulders can become fatigued while sitting for too long working at your desk.

To stay healthy and keep your body in the right shape, it’s important to take regular breaks. Standing up and stretching out your muscles is a good way to refresh your body. You need to restore your proper circulation to avoid any injuries that plague office workers like sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, and tendonitis.

To keep your body from becoming strained from sitting, you should be taking a break at least once an hour. Just a few moments to walk around your office, get a good stretch and give your muscles a chance to be rejuvenated.

Good Posture

Being comfortable at your workstation doesn't mean that you are practising good posture. Proper posture is essential to maintaining your health. Your chair and desk configuration should encourage the correct posture while working. Try to have your feet flat on the floor, your hips to the back of your chair, your back should be straight, and your shoulders should be back for the premium ergonomic posture. It can take some practice to maintain this position and you may benefit from wearing a back brace to help you improve your posture.

Creating an ergonomic office environment for your employees is all about being proactive. Take a closer look at how workstations are set up and how you can use these methods to create a healthy and happy ergonomic office.
