自1965年首次向公众公开以来，学者们一直质疑耶鲁大学贝内克珍本与手稿博物馆（Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library）收藏的一张据称来自 15 世纪的地图的真实性。这张文兰岛地图约有餐垫大小，其中除了描绘出非洲、亚洲和欧洲之外，还呈现出位于格陵兰岛西南部一段名为“Vinlandia Insula”的海岸线。这表明北欧人有可能最早发现了美洲，时间甚至远早于哥伦布的首次航行。一旦得到证实，那么这份地图将具有重大的历史意义。但该地图本系伪造的证据近年来一直在不断积累。最新科学分析终于一举终结了这场争论：用于绘制地图的墨水完全是现代产物。贝内克博物馆早期书籍与手稿策展人 Raymond Clemens 表示，“文兰地图确为赝品。这不是合理的怀疑，而是通过最新分析得出的确凿结论。”
