How to run zoom video conferencing client on th Pi?
Maybe ask the supplier of the software for support: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201362003

This method works for chat and viewing participants, not sure about using audio and video, but it freezes during screen share.
Open a browser on the Raspberry Pi
Browse to: https://join.zoom.us
Enter your meeting ID or Personal Link Name
Click cancel for 'Open xdg-open'
Click 'click here' in the 'If nothing prompts from browser, click here....
Again click cancel for 'Open xdg-open'
Now there is a new link at the bottom of the browser window with a correctly formed url that will start the specific meeting when you click 'start from your browser'

Bookmark the url so that you can open the meeting directly in any browser in the future.

Would there be a way to run it like you do on windows, without having to click start from browser? For me, when I click open-xdg, opens a new tab.

I do see people asking about a video chat program if Zoom video messaging is not usable on the RPI computer I found a program called Jami which is a messaging program includes video chat, voice chat, instant messaging, etc., you can install the program using the command in the terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install jami

There is a instant messaging program called Telegram which doesn't have video calling you can share pictures or videos with other people you can install the program using the command in the terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install telegram-desktop

Zoom is not a video messaging app, its a video conferencing app. The suggested use of Jami or Telegram is not valid. I wish people would research what an item is before responding, it litters up the threads.

Zoom does not offer ARM binaries for Linux, only x86. You can use the web version as someone mentioned or you could try installing Android and using the Zoom APK.

Best option: use the Chrome app.

Edit: Zoom launches OK, but I have had zero success actually connecting to a meeting with it.

Are you suggesting the Chrome app runs on Raspbian?

Yes. I'm running it on Raspbian right now.
  • In Chromium go to the chrome webstore. This link.
  • Click Install App.
  • That's it! Launch it from Menu --> Chromium Apps --> Zoom.

Edit: Zoom launches OK, but I have had zero success actually connecting to a meeting with it.

I'm busy trying to play this NetHack game no I'm only joking around yes it is true I suggest software that I do not test out myself, because understanding Linux software requires patience I did not tell anyone to buy a Raspberry PI computer for video calling that was not me, searching for video calling software or understanding Linux software can take a long time actually several hours well at least for me, people test out the software then report back to the forums tell anyone about how the software runs, or even start a completely new thread meet some people on the forums.

I did find a list of voice chat software you can search through yourself here is a link to the article that lists the best VOIP, and video chat software on Linux:

Top 20 Best Linux VoIP and Video Chat Software in 2020

I have a Raspberry Pi 4 2GB with Rasbian installed.

Since the kids are doing using Zoom video conferencing to meet with their teachers I was hoping to use this for their meetings.

I can get Zoom to work in Chromium but there are problems with the mic.

I tried the app from the Chrome store but when I try to login it times out.

Is there any way to do this?

Do you actually get the Chrome app to work?

I tried in Raspbian and FydeOS and it doesn't work in either.

This will work, now i need a micro ;-)

Did you find the chrome app? There is one that is not the scheduler.

Like I said before I tried it Raspbian and FydeOS and it doesn't working.

Just says "Connecting..." and never connects or if I login it says "Login timeout."

Yes I got it to launch (see screenshot above). But I haven't had an opportunity to do a video call yet. (assumed it would work fine)

OK that's different then.

I can open the app just like in your picture but I assumed you actually joined or hosted a meeting.

Please give it a try!

Try a different approach as I said in some other thread

https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... 6&start=50

Well they are using an Android tablet now but I would like an option with the actually gallery view.

Plus I could just cast the screen via my Chromecast :)

I want to see if the gallery view like on a Windows PC is there.

It would be great if the Chrome app can actually get working m

Like I said before I can get Zoom to work on Chromium with the join from browser option.

But the video is poor and laggy.

Any ideas to improve that?

Also for curiosity I tried a Hangouts call and the quality was much better. Just want Zoom to be as good.

Suggestion: try it with a 64bit OS like Ubuntu

Sun Apr 12, 2020 11:17 pm

I had a strange, show-stopping performance problem on an RPi4 in the last couple of weeks, and my solution ended up being unintuitive: to use 64bit Ubuntu, not 32bit Raspbian. It made a night and day difference. Not just a small improvement.

Why not try it in Ubuntu? This issue might be a 32bit/64bit thing. It's worth challenging the assumption that 32bit doesn't matter here.

BTW: Ubuntu on an RPi4 really likes to have wired ethernet hooked up, as it's support for wifi is nowhere as convenient as Raspbian at present.

Actually tried that-installed Ubuntu with the Lubuntu desktop.

Unfortunately you can only get it to work in Chromium. Video laggy just like in Raspbian.

And I was hardwired into the router so that wasn't part of the problem.

However on a video calling/conference note I did do a Duo call today. Worked better like Hangouts so I am stumped why Zoom won't better like Duo or Hangouts??
