2017 年诺贝尔物理学奖授予在引力波探测上做出贡献的三名美国科学家
2017 年诺贝尔物理学奖授予了“对 LIGO 探测器及引力波探测的决定性贡献”的三名美国物理学家：MIT 的 Rainer Weiss、加州理工的 Barry C. Barish 和 Kip S. Thorne，其中 Weiss 分享一半奖金，另外两人分享一半奖金。Rainer Weiss 早在 1970 年代中期就分析了干扰引力波测量的可能背景噪声源，并设计了基于激光的干涉器去克服噪声。Rainer Weiss 和 Kip Thorne 都坚信引力波是可以探测的。Barish 则是激光干涉引力波天文台（LIGO）项目的主要负责人。2015 年 9 月 14 日，LIGO 探测器首次探测到了黑洞合并产生的引力波。
