全球最大矿业公司表示，中国在“一带一路”倡议沿线国家建设道路、铁路和港口的雄心勃勃的计划，可能带动钢材需求增加1.5亿吨，足以让中国钢厂在今后10年维持运营。
必和必拓(BHP Billiton)称，中国国家主席习近平复兴古丝绸之路及通往东非的海上丝路的计划，可能让中国企业获得大部分海外建筑材料和设备合同，从而使中国的钢材需求增速提高一倍。
