And decide if you need to be able to do online payments etc on your phone. Dev ROMs don't pass Google's safetynet test so that kind of stuff won't work.

On MIUI8 you didn't have to unlock the bootloader to update to the Dev ROM, though I'm not so sure with MIUI9. You will probably have to unlock it. Otherwise going from Global Stable to Dev (even through fastboot) doesn't erase your data. Be careful what options you select though when flashing/updating.

I think you need to unlock the BL now, but you can try doing so through the update app.

Do custom notification icons on the status bar work too? For example, if you use a third-party internet speed meter, on the status bar, instead of showing real-time internet speed, MIUI would show the app's icon.
