Samsung GS8 / GS8+ BYOD

A software update was released from Samsung rolled out today (12/7) for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. This update has now allowed non-Sprint Galaxy S8 / S8+ devices to be supported on Sprint (all US Carriers' variants support).

Thought I'd get the word out.

Woah. That's wicked. That'll make a lot of people happy!

I thought the issue was a back end problem that the DNA2 would refuse to activate it via the list of known unlocked and Sprint ESN. Not a software issue. How does a software update fix that?

The underlying reason was because only the Sprint and factory firmware have the proper network support built into the firmware, and Samsung doesn't have a customer-friendly way to change that like Apple does with their separate Carrier files.

It's possible they added that support the firmware with the latest update.

Checking internally, the latest update released 12/6 that added support is G950USQU2BQK5.

Note: Sprint's system does not use IMEIs, it uses the device MEID. This is usually the IMEI without the last digit. If you are encountering an error when trying to use an IMEI, remove the last digit. This is the basis of a lot of "errors" people seem to be getting. There is no error. You're trying to use the wrong device identifier. An IMEI is 15 digits long, but an MEID is only 14 digits.

Have questions on phone compatibility or bringing your current phone to Sprint? See Sprint's Bring Your Own Phone page for a list of eligible devices and for how to purchase a SIM kit. For certain devices, you may have to request your ESN be added via DNA2 at a Retail Store. Also see the Wiki.

Note, you will not experience full speeds/coverage when using devices which lack full LTE Band support, Carrier Aggregation support or HPUE support on Sprint. For reference, Sprint utilizes LTE Bands 25, 26, and 41.

Do you have a new compatible device you want to swap to? Activate it here.

The My Sprint App is available for iOS Devices on the App Store and for Android Devices on Google Play. Report speed/coverage issues and manage your account.

Will there be anything for the Galaxy S7? Would love to put a T-Mobile one on Sprint...

If I have a sprint device that I unlock, will it work fine on other carriers? Like Tmobile or AT&T?

Depends on the device.

level 1

I'm confused. Are you saying the software update is being released to Sprint s8 devices? Or to all s8 devices?

It looks like it's a general update putting every S8 onto the same software version across every carrier. So all carrier-specific things are handled separately from the base firmware itself (the way it should be honestly).

I was confused too, but Verizon just posted the same thing here:

https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/samsung-galaxy-s8-update/ https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/samsung-galaxy-s8-plus-update/

The current software update provides the most up to date Android security patches on your Galaxy S8, along with support for Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) when switching to Verizon from select carriers, as well as the addition of Samsung Pay.

This seems to confirm that similar updates to other networks' phones will now make them work on Verizon.

Im on verizon bc my firmware wouldnt work with metro and had terrible signal, so does this mean i can go back to metro and have volte wifi calling visual voicemail hotspot and access to all of tmobiles bands?

So does this mean root is coming to the sprint variant?
