One of the Godfathers of Punk Rock Was An Arab American

If the title alone is why you are reading this article, I promise it’s not a just hook. For several years I have been wanting to craft this article. It was never the right time, though when is the right time to make a controversial(?) statement. Still, I (and others before me) have concluded Arabic music is one of the roots of punk rock music, and it could be one of the strongest roots.

Why Now?

So why write this piece now? Here are three reasons.

The first reason is April (i.e., in about a week from publication) is Arab American Heritage month, which was first declared by President Biden in 2022, though it has been recognized as such in states like California for longer.

The second reason is with the ongoing carnage in Gaza and its reverberations felt literally throughout the world and especially here in the United States (at least in the protests we have scene and the verbal and other spats that have occurred since the terror attack on October 7), it’s a good time to remind the world that Arabs, and more…
