MySQL is a very popular database and a good choice for new projects. But is it the best choice?

MySQL Community vs. Enterprise Editions

Traditionally, the MySQL Community Edition has been a mainstay in the open source community for decades, and it is available for free. Originally, MariaDB was a drop-in replacement, but over the years, it has evolved into something close but not MySQL. But many find the Community Edition’s lack of enterprise features frustrating. That leaves two other options.

Oracle offers, at a cost, the Enterprise edition of the MySQL Server. It comes with a connection pooler, the ability to data mask fields, encryption capabilities, and other useful options. Sadly, the enterprise features are not open-source.

Percona, for free, offers enterprise features and more. And those features are open source. In addition, you get the RocksDB storage engine, a choice in load balancers (ProxySQL, MySQL Router, HA Proxy), and DBaaS abilities.

And Percona has been in the ‘MySQL business’ longer than Oracle has.
