Pitney Bowes Parcel Shipping Index reveals Australian parcel volume held steady at over one billion in 2022

By Pitney Bowes

COMPANY NEWS: Latest index figures predict that approximately one-third of all spending in Australia is expected to occur online by 2033.

Pitney Bowes Inc. (NYSE: PBI), a global shipping and mailing company that provides technology, logistics, and financial services, has released the new Parcel Shipping Index featuring 2022 data from 13 major markets around the world, including Australia. For the second year in a row, the study revealed that Australia exceeded one billion in parcel volume, with an average of 35 parcels generated per second.

E-commerce in Australia grew significantly in 2022 and is expected to reach USD 43.2 billion in sales in 2023 and is projected to continue growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.4% over the next four years. By 2033, approximately one-third of all spending in Australia is expected to occur online.

Australians shipped, received, and returned 1.09 billion parcels in 2022, with 2% growth in volume, up from 1.07 billion in 2021. The latest Index shows that 2.99 million parcels were shipped each day across Australia, or 35 parcels per second. Per capita parcel volume remained consistent at 42 parcels in 2022, and an average of 107 parcels shipped per household.

With a large number of carriers in the market, Australia Post accounted for the largest Parcel Market Share by Revenue (47%) and Parcel Market Share by Volume (49%), followed by Team Global Express, DHL Express Australia, FedEx Express Australia, and CouriersPlease. ‘Others’ collectively accounted for 23% of Parcel Market Share by Revenue and 35% of Parcel Market Share by Volume. Carriers in Australia are focused on finding ways to make parcel deliveries sustainable. In 2023, Australia Post increased its fleet of electric delivery vehicles to 4,600, covering approximately 28 million kilometres each year through its electric fleet.

Venkat Rao, country manager ANZ, India & ASEAN, said, “Parcel shipping in Australia remains steady, which is not unexpected as consumer shopping patterns plateau after shifting drastically towards online throughout the pandemic, and as inflationary pressures persist. To meet the ongoing consumer demand, parcel carriers and retailers continue to invest in their e-commerce supply chains, including transitioning to technology platforms that automate shipping processes and provide carrier and budget flexibility.”

The Index also found that global parcel volumes increased by only 1.4% in 2022, following two years of pandemic-fueled growth and impacted largely due to the lockdowns in China. The Index reveals China parcel volumes grew at the slowest rate in Index history, reaching 110.6 billion parcels in 2022 and marking only 2% growth due to lockdowns and COVID outbreaks. Comparatively, China’s parcel volume had grown at a CAGR of 22.5% from ‘17- ‘22. Pre-pandemic parcel volume for China in the ‘180 ‘22 CAGR forecast was 25%, and the actual ‘18-‘22 CAGR was 22%.

The latest edition of the Pitney Bowes Parcel Shipping Index revealed that parcel volume increased across six key countries in 2022—including Australia, Brazil, China, India, Italy, and Norway—while declining in all other major regions (Canada, Germany, France, Japan, Sweden, the United States, and the United Kingdom). Globally, parcels shipped per capita averaged 42, equating to a 0.1% increase on 2021 averages.

The Index found that global parcel volume exceeded 161 billion in 2022, a 1% increase from 159 billion in 2021, equating to more than 5,100 parcels per second and with total carrier revenue exceeding USD 485 billion. The Index estimates global parcel volume will most likely reach 225 billion by 2028, with a 6% CAGR from 2023-2028.

Key takeaways for Australia from the latest Index include:

  • Highest CAGR ‘17-’22 for parcel revenue was generated by China at 17%, followed by the US at 13% and by Italy at 12%
  • China remains the largest parcel volume market with nearly 70% share, contributing to the slow global volume growth in 2022 due to its unprecedented low parcel volume increase of 2
  • United States remained the market with the highest carrier revenue, reaching USD 198 billion, an increase of 7% YoY.
  • While there is a direct alignment between parcels per person and Gross domestic product (GDP) per capita in the US, Germany, Brazil, and India, parcels in China, Japan, and the UK exceed GDP, most likely due to significant exports. In Norway, Sweden, and Australia, there is a reverse effect, with low parcels per person compared to GDP, suggesting a low penetration of eCommerce.
