Nothing Phone (2) confirmed to launch with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1

We’ve been hearing about Nothing’s upcoming Phone (2) for a while now. Back at MWC 2023, the company confirmed that the phone would be powered by a Snapdragon 8 series processor. Now, its founder, Carl Pei, has revealed that the phone will feature the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip.

The 8+ Gen 1 is a significant upgrade over the Snapdragon 778G+ that powers the original Phone (1). Pei says that the SoC is “best-in-class” when it comes to power consumption and heat management. And it is also “thoroughly tested” and “continuously optimized” through many updates since its launch a year ago. So we can expect Phone (2) to deliver a smooth & responsive experience even under heavy tasks.

In fact, he says that the initial tests show that the app opening speed on Phone (2) is twice as fast compared to Phone (1). And the device has an impressive 80% overall performance improvement.

Besides performance, the 8+ Gen 1 brings significant improvements to the camera capabilities. It features an 18-bit ISP that is capable of capturing over 4,000 times more camera data than the ISP used on the Phone (1). As a result, the Phone (2) should be able to take better photos and videos, even in low-light conditions. The founder also hinted that the device will feature premium features like RAW HDR and 4K/60fps.

But why not Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or the upcoming 8 Gen 3?

Pei says that the latest processor is not always the best choice for consumers. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 offers a significant performance boost over the previous generation. But it does so while still making the device accessible to users. This is not the first time we’ve been hearing about Phone (2)’s SoC. Earlier, a Qualcomm executive accidentally confirmed this info via his LinkedIn post. Nevertheless, its still a powerful SoC and we are waiting for Phone (2) quite eagerly.
