KargoBot, the self-driving truck unit of Chinese ride-hailing platform Didi, said on Monday that it will deploy 100 robotrucks on Chinese roads starting in the fourth quarter of 2023, with plans to expand the fleet to more than 1,000 over the next two years. The mobility giant said it is partnering with Shaanxi Automobile Group to make the trucks, capable of driving as a convoy on Chinese highways with a human driver in the lead vehicle. It comes a week after Didi announced a partnership with GAC’s electric vehicle arm Aion to build a tailor-made passenger car model for autonomous ride-hailing services, scheduled for mass production and commercial operation in 2025.
