Help with SAPUI5 fragment callback

We need help with an issue where my custom functions for button presses in a fragment. i.e. closing the dialog window on pressing the cancel button, are not getting triggered.

Here are the steps I took to implement the dialog window:
1. Implemented a custom action "Mass Create" at the table toolbar level via Fiori Application Modeler in Business Application Studio
2. Implemented functions to open and close the dialog fragment:
3. Implemented on press events for buttons in the fragment (with and without a period before the event name):
I've referred to code samples provided in the SAPUI5 SDK but couldn't figure out why I can open the dialog window but not close it. Is it because my dialog is called from the manifest action, instead of from within a view?
I've tried including the controller in my action handler but then the dialog won't even open.
Please advise, thank you.
