Growing ones career in technology can be a daunting task for many, but could something as simple as staying inquisitive help?

By finding a niche within a company, tech professionals can bring in extra value to the business and be a more memorable employee, according to Adrianna Bustamante (pictured), vice president of global alliances and partnerships at Rackspace Technology Inc.

“If there’s an area that you are interested in and passionate about, go learn and drive, because there’s opportunities to create new roles for yourself, new ways to bring value into the organization,” she said.

Bustamante spoke with theCUBE industry analyst Lisa Martin for the “Special Program Series: Women of the Cloud,” during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed recommendations for growing a career in tech and Bustamante’s cloud computing success stories. (* Disclosure below.)

Driving business outcomes from the cloud

Rackspace has often encountered legacy clients using a datacenter model that don’t want to go cloud-only just yet. In this case, the company helps organizations transform within the cloud while maintaining a certain portion of the datacenter on-prem while moving a portion of their operations into Rackspace’s data centers. This enables companies to move away from the CapEx heavy workloads of the past, according to Bustamante.

“Ultimately, we’re always looking to see how we can help transform our clients’ businesses, and often the underlying root of that is through technology solutions,” she stated.

By nurturing a welcoming workspace for all, Rackspace has allowed for more and more talent to dip their feet into the talent pool. This helps allow for a wider net to be cast and more talent to be found and retained.

“More people are raising their hand and interviewing and hiring. I think talent in general, as we’re seeing right now, is so hard to come by and so even more important to retain,” Bustamante said.
