It's an account flag, all done on Google's end.
It gets enabled without having to update any app.
If you have a rooted phone you can enable it but it disables again after a few hours.

You need to wait till Google enable it on your account, or join the Android Auto beta programme.

The coolwalk update was enabled on my account yesterday.
