在半导体领域，日本曾经是世界一哥，80年代甚至打得美国公司无力竞争，Intel退出内存芯片转向CPU也是被日本公司逼得，只不过日本最近20多年错过了半导体技术，尤其是先进制造工艺上已经落伍。
日本这两年也重燃了半导体雄心，希望能够掌握核心技术，为此日本八大电子电气行业巨头，包括丰田、Sony、NTT、NEC、软银（Softbank）、Denso、铠侠（Kioxia）、三菱UFJ等企业在日本政府支持下成立了Rapidus公司。
Rapidus又联合了美国IBM、欧洲IMEC微电子中心等，计划直接搞定2nm工艺 ，最快在2025年量产，2025到2030年的几年中则会给其他企业提供代工服务。
为了扶持Rapidus，日本政府已经提供了700亿日元的补贴，用于先进技术研发。
