What is uuuup! Happy week before Christmas (a.k.a. when I realize it’s almost too late to order gifts on Amazon to be shipped to my family in time!) 🙈

I’ve always been bad at coming up with gifts that people would love. Over the years I’ve learned some of us have the gift of effortless gift giving, some of us don’t. I end up coming up with a few lame gift ideas and spending hours going down dead-end gift research black holes. I’ve since learned to ask friends I know who are good at coming up with personalized gift ideas and really enjoy it.

So when I was playing around with ChatGPT last week and asked it for some gift ideas for people, I was shocked to learn it was much better at coming up with gift ideas given a detailed description than me. The more detailed I got, the more hyper-personalized the ideas were.

So instead of just ordering my gifts (still gotta get around to it), I decided to build a tool to help come up with gift ideas and make the process of searching for gifts a lot quicker/easier!

I used the latest GPT-3 model (text-davinci-003) which was released a few weeks ago to see if it could match what ChatGPT did, and it really does the trick. I added some additional functionality to make Amazon searching easier (quick links to searches, and an Open All in New Tabs button that makes it easy to quickly scroll around and see if there’s anything good).

There are some additional fun things I have the model generating under the hood that I’d like to expose in the UI soon, too, including descriptions of why it thinks each gift would be good for your giftee, and additional questions it would like to know to zero in on better gift ideas to make it more of a conversation. Just wanted to ship what I’ve got before it’s too late for Christmas!

Funny enough I noticed while preparing my post that https://www.producthunt.com/post... just launched yesterday — things move fast in the AI tool world! It’s funny that we zeroed in on a very similar feature set. Reminds me of what happened with AvatarAI and the others launching nearly simultaneously :)

Let me know what you think of the app and what else you’d like to see! On my longer term want-TODO list are: iOS and Android apps (have them mostly going, just need to finish and submit), the ability to save your people descriptions + birthdays and get automatic ideas when birthdays are coming up, and a way of incorporating product/review data using the OpenAI embeddings API to make the search even smarter.

Been a fun project, and nice to actually SHIP IT!
