Percona Server for MongoDB 6.0.2 Is Out for Grabs!

Percona Server for MongoDB
Percona Server for MongoDB

(PSMDB) is a source available database server for MongoDB based on the same upstream code as MongoDB Community Edition. Percona, while committed to provide open source software to the Community in case of the MongoDB database server is limited with the SSPL license of the upstream code. With PSMDB, users receive a drop-in replacement for MongoDB Community Edition that includes all of the features available there while adding extra free functionalities that otherwise would only be available in proprietary MongoDB Inc releases.

For MongoDB, Percona also offers:

While Percona provides free and open source tools, it’s important to remember that the company also offers a set of different tiered premium services including top of the market consultants, managed services, support and training

Hail the new 6.0 MongoDB major version

We always take extra special care before we release a new major version of a database. Upstream major version releases usually need some time to stabilize and for the early age bugs to bubble up. With PSMDB 6.0.2 we feel that it’s the right time to start our PSMDB 6.0 journey, as we want to take advantage of all the benefits the upstream release provides together with  the GA of some of the features we have provided on top!

The main highlights of 6.0 are:

  • time series collections enhancements
  • optimized change streams for your event-driven solutions
  • cluster-wide configuration parameters
  • new operators and aggregation stages
  • clustered collections (collections with clustered indexes) support

And on top of that we have added:

  • our support of encryption key management via Key Management Interoperability Protocol (KMIP) for Data At Rest Encryption (DARE) is now generally available and ready for production
  • backup cursors are now generally available and ready for production use

Not only a server; it’s a whole distribution and more!

PSMDB 6.0.2 is not alone in the releases we are making available! Together with PBM 2.0.2 they form Percona Distribution for MongoDB (PDMDB) 6.0.

What’s really special about this small increment of PBM 2.0.2 is that from now on PBM is fully integrated with Percona Monitoring and Management (PMM). Starting with PMM 2.33 all features of PBM are supported in PMM and we aim to keep it like that!

What’s next? You tell us!

Upstream code skips some interesting functionalities to make them available only in the Enterprise editions. We are investigating which of these would be most beneficial for our community. Your voice counts, let us know which of these would make your life better.

We want PSMDB to be your first choice for a MongoDB server. So if there are any features you are missing, please let us know!

Open source is all about community

Even though MongoDB upstream code is limiting us with the license selection for PSMDB (yes, we really dislike SSPL), we still want to be open-source in spirit. As open-source is all about community – giving back to it and receiving its contributions – if you are a user then please don’t be a stranger!

First and foremost, you do not have to code to contribute! Feedback, or activity on community forums is already a great way to contribute!

That being said, if you do code and want to contribute, please use the GitHub repo and the Contributing guide to do so.

But whether you code or not, please do not hesitate to share with us your feedback about what we are doing, not doing, or shouldn’t be doing!

One of the easiest ways to contribute is to let us know how the features we are still working on are playing out for you. The reason we have tech previews is for you to be able to influence us in what we deliver. One of the MongoDB related tech previews we have currently are the selective backups in Percona Backup for MongoDB 2.0, please let us know what you think about it!
