Google has recently released a major update for the Gmail app, finally bringing full support for the dual-screen form factor used by the Surface Duo.

The Surface Duo was released many years ago, but so far, the Gmail app didn’t offer full compatibility for the dual-screen configuration. This didn’t mean the Gmail app couldn’t run on the Surface Duo, but the app lacked the support for this innovative approach.

According to the information posted on reddit, the official Gmail app has recently been updated with full support for the Surface Duo, so the app now runs on the dual-screen form factor by taking advantage of the entire screen estate.

Needless to say, Gmail isn’t the only email client that feels at home on the Surface Duo, as Microsoft Outlook has obviously updated the app to support the device a long time ago.

The app still needs additional refinements

The update, however, doesn’t seem to be flawless.

Someone on reddit says the app looks updated for foldables, not dual-screen devices. This means Gmail could still need some refinements to work perfectly on the Surface Duo.

“Not really Duo Support. It's a "luck of the split", foldable support. Content wraps on the curved edge - Outlook doesn't do this -. It is important to understand, they didn't target Dual-Screen here; if they did, they can do a better job. So, I'll be giving them feedback on that point,” one user explains.

In the meantime, if you’re holding your breath for another Surface Duo, this is going to take a while. People familiar with the matter said a new Surface Duo model would only see the daylight in 2023, so for the time being, the second-generation device continues to be the latest and greatest in terms of dual-screen Android devices from Microsoft.
