Physical starring Rose Byrne will return to Apple TV+ for a third season. The dark comedy about a female fitness guru is set in the 1980s.

There were some questions about the show’s future after a shaky first season, but season two made continuing the series a no-brainer.

Workouts go on in Apple TV+’s Physical season 3

Byrne stars as the entrepreneurial Sheila Rubin who is trying to build her nascent fitness empire into a brand. But there are plenty of obstacles, including an awful husband and fierce business competitors.

Apple TV+ said Thursday that Physical will return for another season. It’ll be a while though, as season two just wrapped up.

“I am thrilled for the opportunity to continue telling Sheila’s story in creative collaboration with Rose Byrne and the rest of our incredible cast, writers and crew. Rose’s breathtaking, hilarious and brave performance is the North Star on our show’s journey of personal empowerment and transformation in ’80s Southern California in all its synth-pop, sun-baked, spandex-clad glory,” said Annie Weisman, creator and showrunner.

Forget season one

After the first season in 2021, there were plenty who questioned whether Physical would go on. Critics weren’t pleased, and the initial ten episodes earned a mere 65% approval rating on the review-aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes.

But season two, which premiered in 2022, changed everything. It won over the critics and earned a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Rose Byrne was good before, but with stronger writing and a more confident character arc, she is utterly amazing in Season 2,” says IndieWire. “There’s a buoyancy to this season that’s engaging and keeps you watching.”

Physical seasons one and two are available now on Apple TV+. (IndieWire suggests you skip the first season and start with the sophomore one.)
