Privacy Cookbook - Chapter 1.6 - (De)Google - Organic Maps

Whenever it comes to de-googling things, one of the biggest issues people have is Google Maps. Now, I believe in giving Google as little information as possible is being key when it comes to your privacy online.

OsmAnd is probably the second-best option available after Google Maps and even works offline! OsmAnd is available on Android and in the App Store from Apple. One issue some people claim to have with OsmAnd is that it almost has too many functions and can be a little overwhelming.

If you're someone who just wants an open-source map what works and does so easily, you can try Organic Maps, which can be found in F-Droid and the Apple App Store. Organic Maps is based on OpenStreetMaps and as with Osm it works offline. The maps look beautiful, work on and offline, and even has Hike, Bike and Trails in its Navigation.

Features

Organic Maps is the ultimate companion app for travellers, tourists, hikers, and cyclists:

  • Detailed offline maps with places that don't exist on other maps, thanks to OpenStreetMap
  • Cycling routes, hiking trails, and walking paths
  • Contour lines, elevation profiles, peaks, and slopes
  • Turn-by-turn walking, cycling, and car navigation with voice guidance
  • Fast offline search on the map
  • Bookmarks export and import in KML/KMZ formats (GPX is planned)
  • Dark Mode to protect your eyes
  • Countries and regions don't take a lot of space
  • Free and open-source

The best part is, of course, that Organic Maps respects your privacy. No trackers, no ads, no bullshit...

Reject surveillance - embrace your freedom.

I personally love the beauty of the maps, and so it is the go-to map app that I recommend.

Stay safe, and de-google at every opportunity, Organic Maps is a definite step in the right direction and keeps your data hidden (like the treasure it is!).
