The Asus ROG Phone 5S and ROG Phone 5S Pro are finally available in the US. You can snag the 5S model with 16GB of RAM for $1,099 on Amazon and Mobile Advance. The 5S model also has an option for 12GB of RAM, but there’s currently no option to order that one on either site.

On the higher end of the scale, the 5S Pro packs 18GB of RAM and goes for $1,299 on Amazon and Mobile Advance. Just keep in mind that while you can get the 5S in both black and white, the 5S Pro only comes in black.

Both gaming phones have the Snapdragon 888 Plus, which should offer a small boost in performance when compared to the standard Snapdragon 888 that the Asus ROG Phone 5 and 5 Ultimate come with. The 5S and 5S Pro also offer an improved 360Hz touch-sampling rate, as opposed to 300Hz in previous ROG Phone 5 models. Other than that, the phones offer similar specs to the Asus ROG Phone 5 Ultimate, such as a 6.78-inch display, 144Hz refresh rate, 6,000mAh battery, and a 64MP camera, which you can check out in our full review.

Before arriving in the US, the ROG Phone 5S and 5S Pro initially went on sale in Taiwan in August, later reaching European markets in early November.

I really wish Asus could somehow get better retail and carrier agreements in the U.S. If you are an Android enthusiast they actually do make some compelling niche devices like this. Their Nexus 7 was the most highly regarded Android tablet ever.

Also, to reply in advance to the inevitable flood of "ugh why do they make Android gaming phones anyway" that articles like this inevitably attract … if people didn’t buy them then no one would make them. Instead Asus, Acer, Xiaomi, Redmi and Lenovo have all been releasing gaming phones each year. Lenovo was actually going to release a cloud-based gaming phone that was going to include Nintendo Switch-style controllers but it was killed off by the component shortage.

Isn’t this objectively worse than an iPhone 13 Pro Max for gaming? The iPhone has a better chip, silent cooling, outstanding battery despite lower mAh, and perhaps most importantly better optimized games and earlier arrivals through the App Store rather than the Play Store. What am I missing?

Some people want Android?

You’re not wrong, but Android has a lot of options that the iPhone don’t.
Especially emulation.

For the people buying this phone the iPhone isn’t in the conversation. The casual games that occasionally come out first on the iPhone don’t need the horsepower any flagship has and we’re way, way past the time when Epic was making exclusive graphic demo games for iOS.

With active cooling this phone can maintain maximum performance longer than any passively cooled device, with a bigger battery it can game longer (The iPhone has lots of power but also drains faster under load, so the smaller battery hurts even more), and the higher touch refresh makes it much more responsive and there is no shortage of games available on Android (including Fortnite, Diablo Immortal which is surprisingly good in my time playing it and emulators)

TheVerge, on ASUS phone with slower performance CPU than an iPhone: "Ridiculously Overpowered".
TheVerge, on iPhone: Rates highly, no mention of ridiculously overpowered.
