**Edit:** worth link to a theory [1] that the login attempt causes the OS to "update" the password hash to a new format. The problem is that disabled account have no password or hash, and so the new hash is of the empty string. This seems [supported by some claims [2] that the bug occurs on systems updated to High Sierra, but not on fresh installs.
