Jamie Bell — best known for his titular role in Billy Elliot and appearances in Rocketman, King Kong, and other movies — is the latest actor to sign on for an Apple TV+ series.

Bell will act opposite Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men and The Handmaid’s Tale) and NarcosWagner Moura (“Narcos”) in an adaption of the time-traveling serial killer novel Shining Girls.

The novel, written by South African writer Lauren Beukes, is set in Chicago, and involves a time-hopping drifter who hunts women as a way to continue his travels through time. One of his targets then turns the tables by beginning to hunt him through time as well.

Production on the series began in Chicago this month. It is not clear when the series will land on Apple TV+. However, given the time production takes it would seem likely that it will be some time in early-to-mid 2022.

Variety notes that:

“Silka Luisa will write the adaptation and serve as executive producer and showrunner. Moss and Lindsey McManus will executive produce under their Love & Squalor Pictures banner. Leonardo DiCaprio will executive produce through Appian Way alongside Jennifer Davidson. Beukes and Alan Page Arriaga will also serve as executive producers. MRC Television will produce.”

The project certainly sounds intriguing. Apple TV+ already has a good selection of crime, thriller, and science-fiction series. This sounds like it could be an intriguing blend — with a good dose of Depression-era Chicago fun thrown in for good measure. Could this be a big winner for Apple TV+? We’ll have to wait and see. I’m certainly excited to check it out, though.
